Chapter Seven

Silas was stunned to see Sarah climbing from Jeremy’s truck, but he tried to cover it the best he could with a flirty smile. “Please tell me she followed you home and you want to keep her?”

Sarah’s laughter had a slightly nervous edge to it, but it still sounded beautiful. “I promise I’ve had all my shots. The Army saw to that.”

“Damn right they did. And the nurse I got wasn’t even half as pretty as you, sugar.” He took her in his arms and gave her a gentle kiss, rubbing her back gently as if he could rub the tension from her muscles.

“At least you got a female nurse. A lot of the soldiers weren’t that lucky.” She glanced over her shoulder at Jeremy and wrinkled her nose. “So um, what now?”

“Now we go inside,” Jeremy responded simply, holding the screen door so that she and Silas could enter the house first.

Inside, Silas watched Sarah as she looked over their childhood home. He tried to see it through her eyes. The smoke-stained fireplace he’d been meaning to clean up was framed by a rough, cedar mantle; his father had always planned to take it down and apply another coat of varnish to it. The beat up sofa was covered with an old bedsheet to hide the stains that years of wear and tear had inflicted on its surface. All of the various surfaces were cluttered with evidence of the two bachelors that lived there. It was definitely not the way he’d hoped to show it to her.

“Um, sorry about the mess.” He glared at Jeremy. “If I’d known we were going to have company I would have cleaned up a bit.”

“Spur of the moment decision, bro. Besides, I doubt Sarah is here to check up on our housecleaning skills.”

Sarah smiled at both of them, and shook her head. “Nope, but I must admit, Sarge, it’s a shame to see your time in the Army taught you nothing.”

He narrowed his eyes and propped his hands on his hips. “I’ll have you know my bed is made up perfectly, soldier. If you’d like to check, I’d be happy to show you.”

Her cheeks turned light pink, and she looked away nervously. “You guys have anything to offer a girl to drink?”

Exchanging a look with Jeremy, Silas headed for the kitchen. “Beer, soda, or water?”

“Beer would be great,” she said, moving a jacket from the one and only armchair in the room to take a seat.

Silas tried not to take her nervousness personally. Under the circumstances, he figured she was handling things pretty well; put in her shoes, he’d most likely be having a panic attack. He had to focus on the positive. Jeremy had managed to get her here, and by the looks of her kiss-swollen lips, he didn’t have to use force. That must mean she was interested in a ménage on some level.

Returning to the living room, he found Sarah alone. “Where’d Jer go?”

“He said he wanted to change out of his jeans,” she answered, accepting the beer and popping the top to down a few gulps.
