"Who sent you?" Arian yelled as Dynel's fist landed once again in my gut.

I doubled over as far as my chains would allow, choking hard. The muscles in my shoulders strained from having my wrists secured above my head, and blood and snot dripped down my face and chest. I wanted to scream at Arian to do his fucking job as an ally and stop this nonsense—put his blade in Dynel's side—but it seemed this was the game we were going to play: Arian pretended to question me, I pretended to fight the urge to talk, and Dynel beat the ever living fuck out of me. It was a shit game.

"Who are you with?" Arian snarled, flashing his flat teeth. "Are you in alliance with Byriel? The King? End this and talk!"

I slowly lifted my head, glaring hard at the beta. My wolf growled, trying to keep his strength, but the pungent scent of wolfsbane mixed with the mercury shackles had him weak. Too weak.

"The King is dead," Arian seethed. "You'd do well to answer me. There's no sense remaining loyal to a dead man."

Dynel shifted just next to me, his knuckles busted and bleeding from their unrelenting use. I flashed my fangs at the pale, bald alpha. He met my challenge, his dark eyes pulsing red.

"Who sent you?" Arian's voice rose, and Dynel's meaty fist connected hard with my ribs.

Bone crunched under the force, and pain ripped up my side. The urge to bow my head was strong, but I kept it up, letting out a forceful cough right into Dynel's ugly face. The fucker flinched hard as blood splattered all over him.

Dynel's whole body jerked, and Arian flung out his hand, stopping him.

"No!" the beta snarled before Dynel could hit me again.

Dynel growled low in his chest but stayed where he was, obeying Arian like a good dog.

"I understand," Arian sighed hard, "that you feel a certain sense of loyalty to your cause." He paused, and I gathered all the blood and spit in my mouth. "But you will not—"

I spit right at Arian, covering the front of his pristine black uniform in blood. It dripped over his brightly colored patches and down to his shiny belt buckle. He looked absolutely enraged.

An amused chuckle slipped from my lips, but before I could enjoy the moment too much, Dynel's fucking fist landed hard right in my side. My vision burst white, and my stomach twisted as saliva flooded my mouth. But before I could calm my gut, Dynel hit me again—once in the nose and the other in my side.

My stomach tightened and churned, and I lurched forward, vomiting blood and spit all over the floor.

"Fuck," Arian gritted out, carefully stepping away from the mess.

Breathing hard, I glared up at the beta, watching with glee as he tried to wipe my blood off his once pristine dress shirt. His crisp white handkerchief smeared red, and his upper lip curled in disgust.

I opened my mouth to mock the beta, but movement just over his shoulder caught my eye.
