Chapter Sixteen
Fishing For The Truth
The decision to skip her morning run so that she could work preyed on her mind as Kinsley checked her email to ensure there werenât any project emergencies while she waited for her friends to arrive. Being back in Harlow for an extended time had stirred up distractions, and she was going to have to hire help. Falling behind was not an option after all she had put into building her company. She quickly typed up an email to her lawyer, Bill Schneider, asking him to set aside some time to talk later in the day.
Dusty and Gabby hollered as they walked in. âGirl, you work too much,â Dusty drawled as they joined her in the dining room.
âI canât be away too long. I assign projects to my team, and Iâve got to keep things moving along.â Kinsley shut down her computer. âReady?â
âReady as Iâm gonna get,â Gabby said. âWhere are we going?â
âThe cottonwood by Grandpaâs land.â The remote location was Kinsleyâs favorite place to relax.
As they left the house, they were met by TJ Smith who had just stepped up onto the porch. Kinsley hadnât seen him in years. His father, Ted, farmed land close to her grandfatherâs and was an old family friend. Since sheâd been back, Ted had called and offered to help with a few farming tasks.
âHey, TJ. Weâre going fishing. Do you want to come?â Kinsley asked.
TJ shook his head. âNaw, just droppinâ off bills from Dad.â He held out some papers. As soon as Kinsley took them, he stalked back to his fatherâs Dodge and drove away.
âHe always seems so lonely.â Gabby voiced what they were all feeling. âItâs too bad.â
They piled into Grandpaâs â69 Chevy pickup, and Kinsley drove them out into the country. They parked in the shade of a massive cottonwood tree alongside a small stream. Dusty helped Gabby out of the cab. âNice spot, Kins, but isnât this private land? Should we be here?â
âI have permission. Grandpa used to bring me here arrowhead hunting.â
As they strolled along the edge of the river, Dusty stopped and pushed around the dirt with the toe of his boot. He bent down, picked up a perfect black arrowhead, and held it up proudly. After a chivalrous bow, he placed the find in Gabbyâs open palm. Kinsley watched the two of them; it was hard to believe they had never dated. It seemed their mutual attraction was obvious to everybody but them.
âGood eyes, Dusty, but watch yourself. Iâm an excellent hunter.â Kinsley sat her tackle box on the ground. âLetâs fish.â
Gabby spread out a blanket, and they all picked a spot to sit. âHey, Kins, I want to talk to you about your grandpa. Would that be all right with you?â she asked.
Kinsley nodded, and her friend shared the information she had given to Lincoln. âIâve been thinking since then. You donât suppose Skelly would kill your grandpa, do you?â
âIâve considered it, yes. Do you know something?â
âI know Skelly is buying
