“What’s wrong? What’s happened?”

“How long has he been like this?”

Voices, yelling and arguing brought me out of my wonderful rest. I could not hold in my groan. “Stop. Stop it.” I tried to roll into a ball, to shut the world out. “Please, stop.” I couldn’t move because I was held in a vice.

“Enough.” Val barked and everything fell silent. I kept my eyes shut; it took too much energy to even think about opening them. But I was jostled as I felt myself rising and being carried. “Family meeting. Here. Two hours. No excuses.”

“Kazi?” I snuggled into the chest that carried me, protected me from the onslaught of the yelling and fighting. “Kazi? How is—”

“Kazi is well, Raphael. Rest.” Val’s words were enough, I let myself retreat back into the peace in the safety of her arms.
