Chapter 25

Honest

I set the guacamole next to the chips and walked back into the kitchen.

Kadyn pointed the spatula at me. “Sit.”

“Why? I want to help.” In all honesty, I was trying to keep my mind off things.

“You made the guacamole and the pico de gallo from scratch.” He planted a kiss on my lips, softening the blow. “You’ve done enough. Besides it’s my night to cook.” Turning me around, he patted me on the bottom. “Now, go.”

I shot him a withering glance before joining Brogan at the table. “Any idea what that call was about?”

“No clue.” He grabbed a chip. “Judging by his tone and the expression on his face, it wasn’t good.”

I gnawed on my lip. “You don’t think anyone has been hurt, do you?”

“No.” He scooped up a chipful of guacamole. “We receive an alert when someone is injured.”

My knee bounced beneath the table. I couldn’t shake the unease sparked by the expression on Chance’s face.

Brogan glanced at his phone. “Aidan is here.” He met him at the door.

Aidan’s gaze skipped from Brogan’s face to mine. “What’s wrong?”

Brogan shut the door. “We’re not sure. Chance stepped out after receiving a call.”

His frown deepened. “Ethan left the gym after receiving a call… I don’t know… maybe thirty minutes ago?” He grabbed a soda from the fridge. “Need help?”

“You can set this on the table.” Kadyn handed him a plate loaded with corn and flour tortillas. He grabbed the lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese and followed him into the dining room.

A soft click sounded at the door.

We turned as one.

Chance walked in. Ethan and Dakota followed, their expressions grim.

I stood, my fight or flight response kicking in.

Chance looked at Kadyn, then me. “We need to talk.”

“Okay.” My legs wobbled. I sank back onto the chair.

Kadyn set the meat and beans on the table. “Please eat while the food is warm.”

Brogan grabbed some more plates.

Ethan pulled a chair out for his wife. “I’m sorry. We weren’t trying to crash your dinner.”

“You’re fine. Trust me, there’s plenty.” Kadyn claimed the chair next to me.

Chance waited until we were all seated. After several tense seconds, he announced, “Yegor Ivanov is dead.”

“Ivanov,” Brogan murmured. “The man who shot Kadyn?”

He nodded. “The guards found him in his cell foaming at the mouth. No pulse. He was dead by the time they discovered him.”

Aidan piled chips onto his plate. “Who slipped him the cyanide?”

“Good question.” Brogan looked at Chance.

“Dunno.” He grabbed a flour tortilla and slathered it with beans.

Aidan dropped a spoonful of guacamole onto his plate. “Can we tap into their video feed?”

“He was being held in a federal detention facility,” Ethan stated drily.

“So?” His ire rose.

“We can access the feed,” Brogan confirmed. “It’s the blowback he’s worried about.”

Chance held my gaze. “There’s more.”

I froze. My friends’ voices and everything in my periphery faded until the only thing I could hear and see was him.

An apology hung in his eyes. “Angelina Tarasova has been released.”

“What?” It was like he’d punched me in the gut.

Kadyn pulled me onto his lap.
