Chapter Nine

Memphis’s eyes snapped open when he heard the unmistakable sound of someone tossing their cookies. He glanced to the side of the bed where Harper should have been only to find it empty. Memphis immediately tossed the blankets back and rolled to the side of the bed. He was in the bathroom doorway three quick steps later.

“Oh, angel, what’s wrong?”

Soulful blue eyes blinked up at him. “Might have been the olives.” Harper grimaced as if bile was rising in his throat. “Or the hot sauce.”

Memphis grabbed a clean washcloth and got it wet with cold water. He rung it out and then squatted down next to Harper, slowly and gently wiping the cool rag across the man’s ashen face. “Maybe you should stick to plain mashed potatoes in the future, huh?”

“Mashed—oh, god!”

Memphis felt his stomach roll when Harper turned and threw up into the toilet again. It was never easy being around someone getting sick. It was even worse when he couldn’t do anything to stop it. It was wrong that he couldn’t do anything about it. What was the use of being a big powerful shifter if he couldn’t keep one little human from getting sick?

“You done?” he asked when Harper leaned back against the edge of the tub.

“I think so,” Harper whispered.

Memphis reached over and flushed the toilet. The smell was nauseating. It couldn’t be helping Harper’s stomach settle. Memphis wiped Harper’s face again. He got up and got Harper a glass of water to rinse his mouth and then watched as the man rinsed and spit. He flushed the toilet and then took the cup and washrag and placed them on the counter.

“Come on, imp,” Memphis said as he reached down and picked the man up. He carried Harper back into the other room and gently laid him down on the bed, pulling the covers up to his chin. He sat down on the side of the bed and tenderly gripped Harper’s hand with his. “Can I get you anything? Some crackers or tea or something?”

“Maybe later,” Harper said. “I think I just want to sleep right now.”

“Okay, imp.” Memphis leaned up and pressed a kiss to Harper’s forehead. As much as he adored the man, he wasn’t about to kiss him until Harper brushed his teeth…and gargled…with bleach. “I have some work to do downstairs. If you need anything, just come find me.”

Harper gave the barest nod of his head before closing his eyes. Memphis watched him for a minute, worry riding him hard. He wasn’t thrilled with the paleness of Harper’s skin. There was a definite ashen pallor instead of his usual rosy glow.

He couldn’t help but wonder if biting Harper had caused this. The man hadn’t changed into a werewolf, and Memphis didn’t understand that. Maybe the change only occurred when the bite came from violence? Something to have Harper look into or add to the growing list of questions Memphis had been compiling over the years. It seemed like the list was getting longer and the answers were few and far between.
