JACK

Jack didn’t trust the strangers one bit. He didn’t know what they wanted with Millie, but their secrecy set him on edge. They followed them for nearly a day with little indication of where they were going. They were headed north—that much he knew—the opposite direction of where they should’ve been going.

The Voice had been strangely quiet as well, another indication that something was not quite right. Normally, Jack would’ve felt relieved that it was silent, but instead it only served to make him more nervous. It was clear the Voice was hiding something. Something big.

The group traveled back roads, sticking to the shadows with a care that told him they were used to traveling in secret. Just one more reason not to trust them.

As the day shifted into evening, their progress slowed. The feline girl, Aaira, clearly the leader of this little troop, called for everyone to stop before turning to Jack and Millie.

“We must sneak you in under the cover of night. They cannot know you’re here,” she said gravely.

“Who can’t?” Millie asked, dismounting her horse.

Aaira’s cat eyes flicked between the two of them. “Now that we are closer, I can tell you more. Do you know where we are, Your Highness?” She had a unique way of saying his title that made it sound like an insult.

Jack swallowed. As the prince, he’d traveled all over Erinya for various diplomatic trips, but geography had never been his strength.

Reluctantly, he shook his head.

“We’re nearing the city of Theibes, Ohan territory.”

Jack’s eyebrows shot up. He thought back on Ohan-Jin’s suggestion of a regent, of the trepidation felt by everyone in his presence. The Ohans were the only noble family his father had ever feared. And rightly so.

“Why are we here?” Jack asked, his fists clenching.

“Because this is where the Convent of the Saints is, and that’s where we’re going,” Aaira said.

Jack and Millie exchanged a glance. He wasn’t sure what he’d expected, but the devotees of the Saints wasn’t it.

“I don’t understand,” said Millie. “What does the convent have to do with me?”

The feline girl looked frustrated. “All will be explained, but you must trust us. Nearby, there is a tunnel that leads underground, straight to the convent’s cellar. From there, the Matron will speak with you, Millie.”

“And what about me?” Jack asked, irritation flickering through him.

Aaira glared at him. “What about you?”

“I’m going with her.”

“The Matron has not asked to speak to you.”

“I’m the prince.”

“The Matron doesn’t care who you are. If she doesn’t want to speak with you, she won’t.” The girl smiled, green eyes glowing in the moonlight.

A hand touched his shoulder. “It will be all right, Your Highness,” came Millie’s soft voice. “I promise I won’t let anything happen to me.”

He looked over at Millie, and a reassuring smile lit her face. His stomach somersaulted. He knew she could take care of herself, that her powers were more than enough to protect her. It was that he didn’t want to see her go.

He turned back to the feline girl.
