Liana’s pulse didn’t settle back down for long minutes after Brock’s incredible kiss. If not for the stupid bus showing up, they’d still be kissing.

She wanted nothing more than to kiss him again, yet that seemed wrong when they had work to do.

She and Brock reached the administrative building five minutes later. He stepped up to address the receptionist. Normally, Steele’s fiancée, Harper, would be sitting there, but she was out on maternity leave. This woman was likely a temp. “ADA Bax Scala, please. Let him know Brock Greer, one of Rhy’s tactical team members, needs a moment of his time.”

The woman made the call, then motioned toward the door. “Go ahead. His office is down the hall on the left.”

“Thank you.” He drew Liana with him. The door to Bax’s office was open, and the ADA looked up in surprise when they stepped inside.

“ADA Scala? I’m Brock Greer. And this is, uh”—he stumbled a bit over the introduction—“Liana.”

Had he been about to introduce her as his wife? She told herself it didn’t matter.

“Come on in,” Bax said with a smile. The guy wore a pricey suit and glanced at what appeared to be an expensive watch. “I have fifteen minutes before I need to head over to the courthouse.”

“We won’t keep you, and I’m sorry to barge in like this,” Brock said. “We’d like to borrow your landline phone to make a brief call. I—we’re in danger, and I need to contact Rhy about obtaining a replacement vehicle.”

“The Finnegans spent an entire year going through cars as if replacements came in small boxes from the toy store.” Bax shook his head with a sigh. “No reason to call Rhy. I’m happy to arrange a car for you to use.”

“Oh, we couldn’t possibly accept that,” Liana interjected. She hoped Bax didn’t think they had come to take advantage of the connection between him and Rhy.

“I insist.” Bax picked up his phone. “This will only take a minute. Have a seat. You look as if you’ve been in a fight or something.”

“Or something,” Brock murmured. He exchanged a glance with Liana as they sank into the pair of chairs facing Bax’s desk. He looked as taken aback by the ADA’s offer as she was. “I’m happy to reimburse you,” Brock added.

“Not necessary.” Bax flashed a warm smile, then turned his attention to the phone. “This is Baxter Scala. I need a car delivered to the courthouse as soon as possible.”

Delivered? Liana tried to hide her shock. She could only imagine how much that would cost.

“Thanks.” Bax replaced the phone. “All set.”

“That’s very generous,” Liana managed. “But we really only came to use your phone.”

“I know, but I truly don’t mind.” Bax shrugged. “I’m always willing to donate for a good cause. And there’s nothing more important than helping my wife’s brothers and sisters in blue.”

“I—thank you,” Brock said.

“Yes, thank you. We’re very grateful,” Liana added.

Bax stood. “Is there anything else you need? Cash?”

“No, thanks.” From the look in Brock’s eye, she could tell he was drawing the line at taking the ADA’s cash.
