Marlowe was glad he wasn’t playing the part of the tramp, but at least Brad was getting paid, even if it was by sympathetic people, as they smelt him from a distance. Trix, although on the same earpiece, was still at the hotel, Doctor Moritz with her. And while Brad had gone to monitor Nora’s apartment, Marlowe had started his own search for Eva Gonzalez. Garner had given the impression back in Scotland that Orchid had assisted in some way with the theft. But Sonia Shida’s bidding war with Steele had shown that multiple strands of Orchid were desperate to gain the item. For Marlowe, this meant that once more, the left hand of Orchid didn’t know what the right hand was doing.

That showed chaos. Whether it was chaos that Marlowe could use to his advantage, he wasn’t sure yet.

Marlowe didn’t think he’d ever met Eva Gonzalez, outside of that brief virtual meeting in Crime City, a few months earlier. But he couldn’t help but wonder whether the fact she lived so close to where Nora had been staying was less of a coincidence than he’d first believed. Trix had managed to pull up a physical address for her, and Marlowe had headed down to have a more “real world” word.

However, as he had arrived, he saw a woman matching Eva’s description being escorted into a black SUV. Tall, slim, with black curly hair, and in her late forties, but looking ten years younger, she’d left before he had a chance to discuss the scene with any of the onlookers. He didn’t really have time to speak to her. One thing Marlowe was sure about though was that whoever was taking her somewhere, she wasn’t going willingly. Whether it was authorities or someone else, Marlowe didn’t know. What he did know was that if she owed him her life, Eva Gonzalez would be an excellent asset to have.

The street parking near the address was chaotic at best, with cars having parked sideways or pointed out at the road, depending on apparently how the driver felt when they parked. Marlowe had hastened down the line, picking a BMW in the middle of the cars as his target. He had a smart ring on his right hand, positioned carefully on his middle finger, and as he walked past the cars, he would place the ring against the door handles. This wasn’t just a ceramic health ring to tell him how he’d slept the previous night; Trix had been playing with this for quite a while, and as he reached the BMW, he heard a click as the ring’s signal, emulating the Beemer’s fob, convinced the car’s brain to unlock the doors.

Hurriedly, in case the actual owner saw this, Marlowe slipped into the driver’s seat and pressed the start button. As far as the car was concerned, the fob it needed to turn on was onboard, and so Marlowe quickly pulled out of the parking space, following the black SUV.
