The Longmoor Military Railway (LMR) was a military railway built by the Royal Engineers in Hampshire from 1903 to train soldiers in railway construction and operation. It ran from Liss on the London to Portsmouth line to Bordon, where there was also access to the BR network. There was also a loop into Longmoor Camp. At its peak it consisted of over 70 miles (110km) of operational track and sidings. It was officially closed in 1969 though some stock was preserved, both industrial and main line examples.
Outshopped in immaculate LMR livery is WD number 196, Hunslet 3796/1953 carrying the name Errol Lonsdale. She spent most of her working life on the LMR and appeared in the 1966 comedy film The Great St. Trinianâs Train Robbery with George Cole. Later she was purchased for preservation on the Mid Hants Railway and named in 1978 by Major General Errol Lonsdale, Colonel Commandant of the Royal Corps of Transport 1969 â 74. She was subsequently sold on to the South Devon Railway where she was repainted in BR black before being sold into private ownership and moved to Belgium.
