HMNZS ACHILLES Pennant 70

Leander class cruiser mid-1941

Achilles was painted in an Admiralty disruptive scheme in mid-1941. It was comprised of four colours: MS4a, B5, B6 and MS2. This type of camouflage was intended to disrupt the viewer from working out the dimensions and the type of ship they were viewing. Having colours fade into each other made distinguishing various recognition features quite difficult, while the higher contrasts hindered this even further. The problem was, as always, that while a four-colour scheme might have seemed effective to the shore-based designer, it was hell for a busy wartime crew to maintain it in good order. Without it being in good order, it gradually lost its effectiveness. Nonetheless, it was retained until the middle of 1942. Note that single 20mm AA guns were added on each turret top. The Royal New Zealand Navy was established by royal decree in July 1941. All ships that were part of the New Zealand force adopted the prefix HMNZS from then on.
