Chapter Twelve

Sitting in her father’s SUV at a nearly deserted dog park, Keenan gave an impatient Bennie a scratch. Brady was late to meet her but he’d texted he was on his way. “Let’s give him two more minutes, Bennie.”

The cool crisp air was welcome, and she lowered a window as she waited. The weekend forecast for Big Stone Gap called for frost, a tidbit she’d already texted to Gianna. What she wouldn’t give to be a fly on the wall at TriState today, where Gianna planned a showdown meeting with her father and uncle later today, followed by a confrontation with Jaz over the incident in the parking garage. Keenan texted her once more for luck and stowed her phone as Brady’s patrol car slid into the space next to hers.

He opened her passenger door and commenced a rowdy love-fest with Bennie, who jumped from the vehicle so he could run to a fencepost and relieve himself.

“I’m over here, you know,” Keenan said drolly.

“You need your belly rubbed too?”

“That’s a hard no.”

She climbed out with a thermal lunch bag and Bennie’s leash, though he didn’t need it once Brady opened the gate into the fenced area for small dogs. Bennie was greeted instantly by a pair of terriers he’d played with before. She waved to their owner as all three dogs began the sniffing ritual.

“You’re looking pretty jolly for somebody who got her car trashed,” Brady said as he tossed his cap back inside his car. Then he snatched the bag from her and peered inside. “This better be the chicken tetrazzini you promised.”

“It was hot when I left the clinic but you were late.” They found a bench in the sun and she emptied the bag and handed him the larger of two bowls.

“So what’s this favor you wanted? Something to do with your windshield?”

“Let me start with the good news. I’m now officially dating a gorgeous woman named Gianna”—she sucked a breath between her teeth—“and I don’t want to jinx it but it feels like it might turn into something. I really, really like her.”

“Whoa!” Brady’s eyes widened above an enormous smile. “Keenan, that’s fantastic. That means we get to meet her, right? Chad’s going to want to have a dinner party ASAP. You know how excited he’s going to be.”

Chad was addicted to cooking shows. The mere mention of new friends meant the opportunity to try out recipes by his favorite chefs.

“In good time. We’re still getting to know each other but I definitely want her to meet my two favorite guys.” Sharing the news made it real—surreal, even. It wasn’t even two weeks ago that she’d given herself permission just to think about it. “I know you’re going to like her. She’s our kind of people.”

“Why’s that? You talk, I eat. This stuff’s good.”

Bennie and the terriers came over to wind around their feet before tearing off again to play.

“She’s three years older, so thirty-four. Went to Pitt.” She described Gianna’s job and the family
