Chapter Thirteen
When Matt opened his eyes the next morning, he immediately turned his head to check. It was real! Autumn was there. He was here. In her bed. After a great night. Not just a great night, but the best night of his life so far. She was amazing; they were amazing together. They’d made love a second time. Then he’d called out for dinner. The burgers weren’t as good as they would have been if they’d gone to his favorite burger joint, but he’d swear they tasted even better given that he got to eat one sitting on Autumn’s sofa with her wearing just his shirt. Maybe it was just that they were both starving after their exertions. She was quite something. She was as bold in bed as she was in every other aspect of her life. He loved that about her. He smiled to himself. Love was a strong word, but he was pretty sure that love was what he felt for the strong, beautiful woman who lay beside him.
She opened her eyes a few moments later, and his heart leaped in his chest. He was anxious to see how she’d react this morning. He was prepared for her to try to brush him off. He knew how she felt about her work. It was the most important thing in the world to her. She based her identity on her career. And there was the not-so-small matter of her love for and loyalty to Clay. Clay had been like a father to her and her sister. She ran the label for him, and in a way, Matt could see that running it well was the best way she knew to show him how much she loved him. However important her career was to her, Matt understood. But he didn’t see how getting involved with him could take away from it in any way. Jeez, if she ended up marrying him, that would solidify his relationship with McAdam Records in the most concrete way.
He relaxed when she smiled slowly at him. “Good morning.”
He slid his arm around her waist and drew her to him. “Good morning. Did you sleep well?”
“I did—you’d think I was exhausted or something. You wore me out.”
He smiled. “I think it was mutual. We’re going to need to build up our stamina. I don’t know about you, but it’s been a long time for me. What do you say, should we do it again tonight to get me back in practice?”
She laughed. “If practice makes perfect, then you don’t need any practice.”
He enjoyed the compliment, but he’d asked to test her reaction. Would she want to see him again tonight—or was she going to revert to her insistence that this had to be a one and done. He wasn’t going to accept it if she did. He’d chipped away at her resistance all these years; he wasn’t about to give up now. He just needed to know what he was dealing with.
“Sweet-talker,” he said with a grin.
