A GAME OF SHIRTS VERSUS SKINS
Gregory L. Norris
Fresh sweat tumbled down Aaron’s unshaved chin. The warmth of the first decent day that Spring gusted over him, carrying the smell of the burgeoning green around the basketball court along with the scent of athletic male bodies, pumped up and perspiring—his sweat; Lindsey’s, too.
Focusing, Aaron moved in closer, shadowing the dark-haired man’s moves intimately, skin against skin, sweat and scent colliding, mixing into a narcotic, magnificent haze. Aaron blocked the shot, recovered, pivoted, fired. The ball sailed through Lindsey’s groping hands, bounced off the backboard, took a spin around the rim and dropped through.
“Fuck, yeah,” Aaron said.
“Fuck you,” Lindsey chuckled. He grabbed the ball and dribbled.
“Later, if you insist.” Aaron strutted over to his water bottle, aware of the swell of his balls with the steps, the sweat of them. A warm breeze whispered over the glistening flesh of his bare arms and hairy legs. He reached down, scratched his nuts through the fabric of his camouflage cutoffs and damp boxer-briefs. Aaron’s meaty twins felt as big as the basketball, its hollow clang off the time-blanched blacktop carrying through the afternoon air with a reassuring cadence. He gulped a sip of water, pulled the bottom of his T-shirt up to mop at his face, and when he looked again, two dudes in baseball caps and shorts, sneakers, no socks, were standing on the court, shooting dirty looks.
Thing One was tall, with puppy-dog eyes and a trim, tanned physique, smooth on the patch of chest visible around his black wife-beater, his legs dark with pelt. Thing Two balanced a basketball reverse-scoop, like some arrogant French waiter might hold a serving tray. He didn’t look much brighter than his counterpart; young, early twenties maybe. Their scowls, meant to intimidate, brought a smile to Aaron’s face. He tipped his chin in that universal greeting among males, the one that normally makes instant bros and buddies of strangers on a baseball diamond, a football field or a hoops court. In this case, however, the gesture failed.
“You gonna hog the place much longer?” Thing One didn’t so much ask as demand.
Lindsey ceased dribbling and strutted over. “That depends, I guess.”
“On what?” This from Thing Two.
“On whether you’re willing to suck my hog, dude.”
Aaron snorted a chuckle. The look of insult at the assumed disrespect followed by macho roostering restored his smile. The two dudes postured. Thing Two dropped the ball. They started over, their expressions hardened into typical tough-guy game faces—so like the young grunts Staff Sergeant Aaron Bullen routinely broke, reshaped and fine-tuned into real men and true soldiers.
He stepped between Lindsey and the charging young tigers and held up his hands, creating a barrier between opponents. Both sides dug in their heels. “Hold on, now. This is just some friendly hoops court banter. Guy talk. No reason to go to war over it. There’s enough of the real thing out there in the world as it is.”
Thing One shifted from his right foot to his left.
