Zanderâs words stayed with me. I should have been angry with his actions, the way heâd chosen me and almost forced me to grant his wish. But Iâd been so lowly, beat down and sad for so long, I did not have it in me to be angry with him. His apology, laced with words of need, was acceptable, and my mind was drawn again and again to the key fact that he was my husband.
Why? That was part of the deal I did not understand. Did my step-mother have something to do with it? I did not need to be his wife to create a potion, yet heâd married me in front of all the Rovers.
Zander woke me in the same manner the next morning, a light step at the tent entrance, and then the promise of breakfast while I dressed. I selected a pale blue dress. Was this real? I felt as though Iâd passed into a dream, to another world where my worries melted away. I even pushed the niggling sensation that all wasnât well away.
Zander returned with a tray of food, a question in his gray eyes. I sat across from him and took a breath, recalling his words from yesterday. Free to leave if I completed our bargain. âWhat would you like to do today, Nesrin?â he asked.
My cheeks curved up into a smile, I could get used to this. Instead of shouting I was served a meal and asked what I wanted to do. It felt good, as though a token of power had been passed to me, and heâd do anything, everything in his power to make me happy. To ensure I stayed. And if it was because of what I could give, then I would.
âI need to gather herbs,â I explained. âRoots, mainly, they grow in the thick shade of woods, I thought I saw a likely spot yesterday.â
âIn the enchanted wildwood?â He raised an eyebrow but the way his lips curled up told me he was teasing.
âNo.â I bit into a hunk of bread. âNot there, plenty of herbs and roots grow outside its boundaries, although I assume the herbs within likely carry properties I am unsure how to use. And. . .â I trailed off, wondering if I should tell him about the book I needed to retrieve from my fatherâs house. I had no desire to break the spell of happiness that had been cast upon me and return to that house, see my step-mother, and be reminded of what had happened there. Since I was only beginning to get to know Zander, I didnât want him to see the house, to see my old room and the cloud of shame that hung over that place.
His warm hand on mine jerked me out of my thoughts. âWhat is it, my lady?â
âNothing.â I tugged my thoughts back to the present. âItâs just, you spent the day with me yesterday. I donât want to take up all of your time.â
Placing his head on his heart, he leaned forward, his tone soft.
