Not breaking down is more than I can say for the place I’m living.

Two of the staff members helped haul my belongings to my new apartment. It’s a stone’s throw from the stadium and about five percent as nice.

I agreed to share this apartment with two teammates sight unseen due to low rent. “You get what you pay for” has never been truer.

Two guys, one of whom I’ve met briefly once, occupy the couch. They both stand when we open the door.

“Hey, Nate?”

“Yeah.” I shake his hand. “Ace, right?”

“Yep, and this is Dominic. He goes by Dom.”

Dom stands and shakes my hand. “Welcome.”

It’s odd looking both of them in the eye, as I’ve always been the big guy. But we’re all big guys here.

“You need help with your stuff?” Dom points to one of the guys bringing in some bags.

“I don’t have much. I can probably grab the rest.”

“No biggie.” Ace taps my chest with his fist.

Both are out the door before I can turn around. They plunder the back of the team SUV and gather the rest of my belongings.

“I guess that takes care of that.” The guy who drove everything here laughs.

I follow them up empty handed and a bit guilty for not carrying anything. Now I understand how Mom felt the one time she didn’t bring anything to the church potluck.

“Thanks,” I say as they drop everything in the living room.

I close the door behind us, and the handle comes off in my hand. “Oh, my bad.”

Ace laughs. “It happens more often than you’d think.”

“I can fix it if you have some tools.”

“For real?” He removes his cap and wipes a hand over bleached hair.

“Yeah.”

Dom smirks. “Ace is a city boy, not very handy.”

“My tools are a bat and glove,” Ace says.

Dom shakes his head. “I have some tools.” He stands and walks toward the hallway, then turns around. “It’ll be nice to have some help around here.”

“Hardy har har,” Ace calls behind him.

A water drop falls on my forehead. I glance at the ceiling and another falls.

“It does that sometimes,” Ace says.

A dark circle is directly above me on the popcorn ceiling.

“Come on, I’ll show you your room.”

I follow Ace down the hall, and we squeeze by Dom. He’s digging in an open closet that has a small washer and dryer stacked inside.

“The room on the end is yours.”

I enter a room barely large enough for the bed and dresser.

“Perks are it comes furnished.” Ace’s tone is sarcastic to match his dramatic hand motion.

“As long as there aren’t leaks over my bed, it’ll be fine.” I check the ceiling to be sure. “Lucky for me, I grew up at the lowest end of middle class.”

“I see you found your room.” Dom sticks his head in the door. I doubt all three of us could fit inside.

“Yep.”

“I grew up in the Dominican Republic with seven brothers. You won’t hear me complaining,” he adds.

“I’m not complaining either,” I reply.

Ace laughs. “Be humble if you will. This place is a dump, and we all know it.
