Chapter Six

Brewer

One hand on Nova’s forearm, the other on the back of her thigh, I held her tight against me, turned on as fuck but loving the added warmth of her small body. I wanted to run my hand up over her ass, squeeze and knead through the blankets.

Hell, I wanted to rip them all off, her clothes included, and impale her on my aching dick. Keeping my hands to myself had to be the hardest fucking thing I’d ever done. Even though she wanted me just as badly, I expected she’d put up a fight.

The idea of subduing her, tying her to my bed while spitting mad, fire glinting in her eyes, her chest heaving, added fuel to the fire inside me, and I clenched my jaw to keep a groan from slipping out.

“Do you suffer from PTSD?” she asked out of left field, jerking my thoughts back to reality.

“Not as bad as some,” I answered and cleared my throat. “The sound of gunfire gets to me if I don’t keep a tight hold on my thoughts.”

She sighed and rubbed her cheek against my chest. “I never saw action like you, but sweltering heat, the kind that drips sweat into your eyes, constricts my lungs like a motherfucker.”

“How long did you wait in the desert heat for that shot on Jalili?”

“I was in place with my spotter before the sun rose, and the fucker didn’t make an appearance until late afternoon.”

“Shit.”

“Yeah.”

I closed my eyes and tipped my head back against the chair. “Where’d you learn to shoot?”

“My dad.” Nova sighed again. “I wasn’t the son he’d always wanted, but that didn’t stop him from teaching me how to shoot, how to make small auto repairs, and brew beer.”

“Your father was a brewer, too?”

Nova nodded.

“What’s your best memory of him?”

Silence settled over us for a while, and I wondered if I’d gone too far in trying to build a bridge between us.

“He took me to a festival in Charleston when I was five,” she finally whispered as though tears thickened her throat. “I remember sitting on his shoulders, his strong hands wrapped around my ankles to keep me in place. I’d pulled off his hat and put it on my own head, but the brim kept slipping down so I couldn’t see.”

She inhaled deeply before continuing. “I remember thinking I sat on top of the world, atop the biggest mountain, the strongest man on earth. I remember hoping I would grow up to be like him.”

“Did you?”

“Not in stature, but I think in every other way. My mom was tiny as hell, too.” Nova huffed a snort. “I was determined my size wouldn’t stop me from doing whatever the hell I wanted to.”

I found myself chuckling at the stubbornness in her voice. “Your nickname with the CIA pretty much sums up your drive -- and the accomplishment.”

“Black Widow.” Her voice quieted to a mere whisper, lacking the pride I’d expected.

“You’ve got one hell of a hook, that’s for sure.”

“Yeah, but my fists were ineffective on you.
