As Felipe led his men away to search the ground level of the house, Diego turned to his remaining men, holding up a finger to draw their attention. “We move upstairs. Everyone we encounter must be taken alive! I will kill the man who harms anyone upstairs! ” We are seeking the wife of the British captain Brewer. We gag and bind everyone we find. Now follow me.” They set off into the darkness of the house.

Elizabeth Brewer sat exhausted on the edge of her bed and watched as Sally, the upstairs maid, took a turn pacing back and forth, humming in an effort to lull little Anne to sleep. Elizabeth looked at the clock on the wall and groaned. Nearly two o’clock! She herself had walked the selfsame path with her stubborn daughter for the last two hours before Sally had gently knocked at the door and offered her assistance.

Watching her now, Elizabeth envied the older woman her patience with the child.

“Shhh,” she cooed to the babe. “Hush now, my precious.”

“Sally,” Elizabeth said wearily, “you are a Godsend. Here, let me… What was that?”

The maid looked up. “What was what?”

“It sounded like something fell against a wall.”

“I didn’t hear anything.”

Elizabeth’s next words were interrupted by breaking glass. She went to her bedroom window, which was on the front of the house, and looked out warily. She saw nothing. Still, she felt uneasy.

“Sally, I think—” A heavy thud was heard from below, and Elizabeth’s eyes grew wide in alarm. “Wait here. I shall go wake my father.”

She ran past the maid and down the hall three doors to her father’s bedroom. She burst in without knocking and shook the governor into wakefulness.

“Elizabeth?” her father said, once his eyes were able to focus. “What is the meaning of this? What’s…” A scream was heard from below, followed by the sound of plates smashing on the floor. The governor sat up. “What’s happening?”

“It appears we have thieves below, Father.” She went to his window and looked out. Her father’s room was at the back corner of the house, and she hoped to signal the servants’ cabin for help. Instead, she saw what she took in the darkness to be a man bearing a cutlass come out of the cabin. “No, not thieves,” she said. “Pirates.”

“Pirates?”

“Yes, and it looks like they’ve killed everyone in the servant’s cabin. I must get back to Anne. Excuse me, Father.”

She dashed from the room, leaving her bewildered father to his own devices. Her heart nearly froze in fear as she heard footsteps coming up the stairs. She entered her bedroom, closed and latched the door, and turned to find Sally sitting on the side of her bed, holding little Anne.

“Mistress, what is happening?” Sally whispered.

“Pirates, Sally,” Elizabeth said. She looked around the room and cursed herself for not having a pistol hidden somewhere. Her eyes went back to her daughter in Sally’s arms and a horrifying thought occurred to her. What if they’d heard of Anne’s birth?
