Chapter Five

Breed walked down the hall and entered Cowboy’s clinic. Kizzy was asleep and he knew she needed her rest to heal but he wanted to talk to her. He sat down in the chair that he’d dragged as close to the bed as possible. He studied her face while she slept. He got to know the curve of her face and the arch of her brow.

She no longer had the IV in and he was glad about that. Another thing he was happy to see was that her breathing seemed to be better. She was no longer struggling to breathe. Maybe her ribs weren’t fractured after all.

He hoped that Crow would have some answers for them tomorrow. Something to get them started anyway. They had a job to do if they were going to stop Joey and set up Brian. Kizzy hadn’t deserved what Brian did to her and while they couldn’t go back and change her past, they might be able to get justice for her future. He also wanted to bust Blade in his dealings, especially the trafficking. He could not save the ones that had been taken already, but he could stop the man from taking anymore.

Breed laid his head back with a tired sigh as he closed his eyes and let the weariness wash over him. He fell asleep in minutes and everything went quiet.

Sometime later, he woke up. He wondered for a moment where he was. Then he remembered. He raised his head from where he’d been slumped in the chair.

Kizzy was sitting up on her pillows staring at him.

He shook his head, yawned and stretched his large body out.

“You were here all night?” she asked quietly.

He sat forward and clasped his hands together. “Yeah, I suppose so.”

She stretched out her hand to him.

He paused and then took her hand in his and felt that jolt again just from touching her skin.

“I feel it too,” she whispered.

He cleared his throat. Not really wanting to admit that he wanted her. She wasn’t in any shape to do the things he had running through his head.

“I never had anyone care about me,” she admitted. “You don’t even know me and yet, you saved me from dying in that dingy. Then you brought me here. Then you sit here while I sleep.”

Breed felt a bit uncomfortable with her listing of his actions. He wasn’t a knight in shining armor, far from it really. “Anyone would—”

“NO!” Her voice rose. “Not just anyone. I have grown up around men who cared only for themselves. I just came from a place where I was beaten and just because of who I was.”

Breed stared at her. “I detest abuse on anyone. Especially violence by men on females.”

“Yeah, I gathered that much.” She smiled and scooted over on the bed.

He watched her closely.

She sat up and winced as she pulled her large t shirt off.

Breed simply stared at her bare breasts. Her nipples were erect and rosy. “Damn, you are beautiful,” he whispered.
