I was welcomed at the British Embassy as someone who had been lost, presumed dead, in the deepest, darkest African jungle for years.

They had, of course, assumed the worst when neither I nor Massing could be found after our rendezvous and strenuous efforts had been made all the preceding afternoon and on through the night to track us down.

The news of Massing was bad, his heavily beaten body having been fished from the Danube only an hour or so before I reappeared. There was no way of knowing if it was Lomidze’s men or the Austrians who were responsible for Massing’s death, though we were at least now in a position to ask my former captor himself about that.

Indeed, the delight evidenced at the gift I delivered to the ambassador was considerable.

There was every expectation Lomidze would be shipped back to Britain, where he could choose to either help our secret service and diplomatic corps with his own vast bank of information and contacts or, if he preferred, he could be handed over to the Turks, as a gesture of good-will on our part.

He was unlikely to find the latter an appealing prospect.
