Dexx wasn’t going to just head out to battle knowing that one of his kids needed him. Desperately.

There was no fighting in Kansas. It was like the fight-free zone right then, so…

He grabbed the door witch assigned to him, a guy by the name of Jed, and went back to the Whiskey house. He pulled out his phone and called Derrick as he went around the house and rounded up the kids.

They all met in the girls’ attic room without Jed.

“Okay,” Dexx said as Tyler, Mandy, Ember, Kate, and Bobby gathered around him, Derrick hanging back by the door. “Listen up. Rai needs your help.”

“What—” Mandy started.

“No way!” Leah said with excitement.

“How—” Kate asked.

“Shut it!” Dexx didn’t have to use his alpha will.

Derrick raised an eyebrow but remained quiet.

“Rai’s trapped between life and death in the crater. Jack couldn’t help her. I need you guys to figure out a way.”

“Uh, okay,” Tyler said. “But how?”

“Don’t know.”

“Why us?” Bobby asked, his blue eyes narrowed.

Dexx wished he’d given Bobby the bite. Dexx knew Bobby would be a great candidate for the shifter bond. “There are about a thousand different countries all attacking at once right now, and your mom—Aunt Paige and I and Leslie and everyone else have gotta go handle that.”

“Wait,” Mandy said fiercely. “Shouldn’t we stay here if the world’s on fire and stuff? I mean, that’s what Mom said.”

“Kansas is safe.” It should be anyway.

Ember snorted.

Why did no one ever believe him? “It’s already been bombed.”

Tyler pulled the corners of his lips down and bobbed his head up and down and side to side with a shrug.

“Also, there’s a ton of demons protecting the whole damned state in a bid to get it, so, yeah. It’s the second safest place on the whole damned planet besides here.” There were a ton of demons. Shit. And Dexx was the paranormal leader. Fuck. “You deal with that. Derrick, you’ve got the kids.”

Derrick gave him a confused thumb’s up.

Dexx headed for the stairs. “Save Rai.”

“On it!” Tyler said with a salute.

Good because Dexx had people to coordinate and a battle to win. He turned to leave but stopped short. “Hold on a sec. Bobby, I need a word in private.”
