Chapter Seventeen

Keira

I love Aaron.

I repeated the words to myself, again, as I remembered the look on Brodie’s face as he told me how beautiful he thought I was. His expression was earnest, and even though I knew the man was an incredible actor, I didn’t think he was practicing his skill. Not with me.

He’d left a while ago, and I was getting ready for work. I had some paperwork to do before the bar opened, and I needed to get my head on straight before I got there and royally screwed up the numbers.

But the awful comments left on my pictures and Brodie’s kept flashing behind my eyes, which lead me to replay that whole scene at the table this morning. I’d had a strong urge to kiss him, which I had no business doing when there weren’t cameras around to document it. And thinking of kissing Brodie led me down another train of thought—namely, making myself come with my B.O.B. while imagining it was him touching me. Tasting me.

“Fuck,” I muttered, tossing down the hairbrush and flipping off the bathroom light.

I needed to focus. This was all an act. In the end, Brodie would get his part, and I would get Aaron. Everything would be as it should be, and our lives would move on.

In the meantime, I resolved to stop reading internet comments. I turned off the alerts for the post. Of course, that meant I wouldn’t know if Aaron commented on the pictures. Maybe he would, and see my lack of response as a challenge. That could push him to try harder. To break up with that woman and beg me to come back to him.

To be with him, for real.

I tried to drum up some excitement over the prospect, but I felt nothing. I told myself I was just emotionally exhausted, and I put it out of my head. It was time to go to work. I could think about Aaron and our eventual reunion later.

Duty called, and McCain’s was my number one priority.
