THE SENATOR HARRIS FROM SILICON VALLEY AND HOLLYWOOD
When longtime California senator Barbara Boxer announced her retirement in 2015, the San Francisco Mafia was ready. They had been preparing for this moment for some time. It was a coronation. Harris won every pollâthe vast majority by double digitsâand dominated fundraising. She eventually beat Democrat congresswoman Loretta Sanchez by more than twenty points before coasting past the Republican nominee in the general election in 2016.
The only significant negative attention she attracted during the campaign was for dipping into the kitty to fund first-class flights, limousines, and expensive hotels. She insisted on extravagant accommodations, racking up bills at the St. Regis, the Waldorf-Astoria, and the Four Seasons.
One ex-aide said of her, âKamala demands a life of luxury.â This would put her right at home with the other public servants of Washington.
Another strategist said, âShe spent an ungodly amountâ and âshe wants to live the life of someone in the White House and she hasnât even won the Senate yet.â Prescient. (Staffers and aides would complain about her âoverspendingâ during her failed 2020 presidential campaign.)41
On January 3, 2017, Harris was sworn in, making her the first black woman to represent California in the United States Senate.42
She served only two-thirds of one term in the Senate, and a significant portion of that time was spent campaigning for president and vice president. It was during this time she pivoted to the left. Big league. In fact, a GovTrack analysis concluded that she was the most liberal senator in 2019, even more radical than socialist Bernie Sanders.43
Walking in Bidenâs footsteps, her signature moment in the Senate was leading a witch hunt against a conservative Supreme Court nominee. In Kamalaâs case, her target was then judge Brett Kavanaugh after he was tapped by President Trump in 2018. Harris smeared him as a dastardly sexual predator and perhaps a gang-rapist. It was all based on lies, but it did position her on the political hard Left and closer to the base.
The spectacle got especially absurd when Harris mockingly referred to the judgeâs pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution as âthat book you carry.â44
Cringe!
Kavanaugh was confirmed to the Supreme Court on October 6, 2018.
Even friendly papers like the Los Angeles Times knocked her approach to the hearings.45 SFGate ran a particularly brutal headline: âKamala Harrisâ Viral Grilling of Kavanaugh Ends with a Thud.â46
Kamalaâs steady rise through the American political ranks hit a brief but embarrassing setback during her presidential run. The then fifty-four-year-old announced her candidacy in January 2019, having been a senator for only two years. She would drop out less than a year later without collecting a single delegate.
Kamalaâs campaign never picked up much momentum, even with overwhelmingly positive media attention (as documented in Breaking the News). The most (only?) memorable moment of her campaign was during a debate, when she attacked Joe Biden over his past positions on desegregation and busing, suggesting he might be a racist.
At one point, she even suggested Joe Biden makes women uncomfortable. When several women accused Biden of unwanted touching, Harris said she believed them.
