Chapter Fifteen

Roger hesitated. “We don’t know if someone is trying to frame you for Thornton’s murder, or if it’s just a big coincidence,” he said.

That feeling of panic was stronger now, and Emily curled her hands into fists and pressed them to her mouth. She didn’t need to point out Vic’s editorial had also made her seem like a suspect. Between the biscuit box and Vic’s veiled accusation, Emily knew things might be looking worse for her than for Trish at the moment.

Unless the police think we went in on it together.

Emily’s breathing became rapid and shallow, and she felt Roger’s hands against hers, gently pulling them down and away from her face. “Miss Emily, look at me.” He leaned toward Emily so she had no choice but to comply. “Remember, I started this conversation saying you aren’t a suspect.”

Emily nodded feebly. “I guess I forgot,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She focused on slowing her breathing, feeling comforted by Roger’s words as well as his reassuring grip on her hands.

“First of all, I know you’re not the type to kill someone, especially not over something as silly as a bad review. Second, we know Eternal Rest has been full lately. How could you possibly sneak out, kill someone, dig a grave, stash the body, and get back here, all before your guests noticed? Third”—here Roger paused and looked embarrassed—“Detective Hernandez still has the login information you gave him for your security cameras. He took a peek at the footage from Monday night, and of course, no one came or went from Eternal Rest.”

Emily looked at Roger incredulously. “Is that even legal?”

“If you want to get technical,” he began, shifting his gaze away from Emily, “well, you see—”

“It’s okay,” Emily interrupted. “I gave Danny the login information to help with one murder case, so I don’t mind that he’s using it to help with another, especially if the footage helps clear me of any suspicion. Speaking of Danny, why didn’t he just call to tell me all this?”

Roger looked embarrassed again, and he ducked his head. “Danny doesn’t want you anywhere near this case. He didn’t want to tell you about the biscuit box having Eternal Rest’s name on it, because he said it didn’t affect you, anyway. Plus, I think he figures if you found out about any tie between the murder and you, you’d dive into the investigation on your own. But, you know how gossip travels. I didn’t want you to hear it from some unofficial source, and I didn’t want you to be caught off-guard if people around town start whispering about you.”

Emily sighed dramatically. “They already are. My mom called me this morning with a similar warning, but it was because of that opinion piece in The Oak Hill Monitor, not because of the biscuit box. It’s been a really long day, Officer Newton.”

“Just remember, you have nothing to worry about.”

“Unless someone is intentionally framing me. Vic Oberfeld made me look like the one with the most likely motive in that editorial of his.
