Chapter Fifteen
Roger hesitated. âWe donât know if someone is trying to frame you for Thorntonâs murder, or if itâs just a big coincidence,â he said.
That feeling of panic was stronger now, and Emily curled her hands into fists and pressed them to her mouth. She didnât need to point out Vicâs editorial had also made her seem like a suspect. Between the biscuit box and Vicâs veiled accusation, Emily knew things might be looking worse for her than for Trish at the moment.
Unless the police think we went in on it together.
Emilyâs breathing became rapid and shallow, and she felt Rogerâs hands against hers, gently pulling them down and away from her face. âMiss Emily, look at me.â He leaned toward Emily so she had no choice but to comply. âRemember, I started this conversation saying you arenât a suspect.â
Emily nodded feebly. âI guess I forgot,â she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She focused on slowing her breathing, feeling comforted by Rogerâs words as well as his reassuring grip on her hands.
âFirst of all, I know youâre not the type to kill someone, especially not over something as silly as a bad review. Second, we know Eternal Rest has been full lately. How could you possibly sneak out, kill someone, dig a grave, stash the body, and get back here, all before your guests noticed? Thirdââhere Roger paused and looked embarrassedââDetective Hernandez still has the login information you gave him for your security cameras. He took a peek at the footage from Monday night, and of course, no one came or went from Eternal Rest.â
Emily looked at Roger incredulously. âIs that even legal?â
âIf you want to get technical,â he began, shifting his gaze away from Emily, âwell, you seeââ
âItâs okay,â Emily interrupted. âI gave Danny the login information to help with one murder case, so I donât mind that heâs using it to help with another, especially if the footage helps clear me of any suspicion. Speaking of Danny, why didnât he just call to tell me all this?â
Roger looked embarrassed again, and he ducked his head. âDanny doesnât want you anywhere near this case. He didnât want to tell you about the biscuit box having Eternal Restâs name on it, because he said it didnât affect you, anyway. Plus, I think he figures if you found out about any tie between the murder and you, youâd dive into the investigation on your own. But, you know how gossip travels. I didnât want you to hear it from some unofficial source, and I didnât want you to be caught off-guard if people around town start whispering about you.â
Emily sighed dramatically. âThey already are. My mom called me this morning with a similar warning, but it was because of that opinion piece in The Oak Hill Monitor, not because of the biscuit box. Itâs been a really long day, Officer Newton.â
âJust remember, you have nothing to worry about.â
âUnless someone is intentionally framing me. Vic Oberfeld made me look like the one with the most likely motive in that editorial of his.
