Federal troops file out of Louisiana in accordance with an order from President Rutherford B. Hayes. When the troops left Louisiana and South Carolina, He-construction was officially over.

The African-American men who held office during Reconstruction provided Southern blacks with more legal equity than they had previously received as slaves or would gain under legislatures controlled by the Democrats after Reconstruction. The new constitutions passed during Reconstruction instituted many reforms within the South. The political failure of Reconstruction, during and after the Reconstruction era, was that these achievements were often undermined.
