CHAPTER 18

“There he is.” Tilly pointed down the hallway toward the waiting area.

Following behind her great-aunt, Felicity balanced a cup of coffee in each hand. Tilly seemed to know where she was going. The last time Felicity was here was when she was eight and fell from a tree, dislocating her elbow. They’d renovated the hospital since then.

“Rayne,” Tilly called his name and waved to get his attention.

Standing up from his seat, Rayne met them at the entry of the waiting area, his arms open wide to his side. “What are you two doing here?”

“We came to find out if you heard anything, if you need anything, or if there is something we can bring you two.” Tilly smiled and waved at Mary Miller, sitting in the chair next to Rayne.

Rayne leaned down and gave Tilly a hug. “I appreciate you coming to the hospital. I was going to call you soon. The doctors are running one more test, but they think they found the problem.”

“What is it?” Felicity asked.

“Dad has a blockage in one valve in his heart. There’s a procedure they can do to unblock it. He should be here another day or so, then he can go home. Of course, he needs to take it easy for a while, which my father doesn't know how to do.” Rayne ran his fingers through his hair.

“Is there anything you and your mother need? We can sit with your mother if you need to get something to eat, or we can go get something for you,” Felicity offered. “We brought some coffee from the bakery. I’ve heard rumors of how bad hospital coffee can be.”

“I appreciate that.” Rayne took the cups of coffee. “Mom is going to run home and check on my brothers as soon as the last test is done.” Rayne walked back to the chair where his mother was sitting and handed her one cup of coffee.

Felicity and Tilly followed.

“Hi, Mary.” Tilly took the seat next to her and put her arm around her shoulder.

“Hi, Mrs. Miller.” Felicity reached out and took one of Mary’s hands.

“Mary, please. I feel like we’re friends now.”

“Mary,” Felicity repeated her name. “Tilly and I wanted to see if there’s anything we could do for you and Rayne.”

“I can’t think of anything. It’s been a long day.” Mary sighed.

Felicity took the empty seat where Rayne had been. He picked up his hat from the chair next to her then sat. “Rayne mentioned you were going to run home and check on the guys. Is that something Tilly and I can do for you? We can take them something to eat so you don’t have to worry about that.”

Mary chuckled. “I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Those boys have worked all day. I’m sure they’re starving. When you were at dinner on my birthday, you saw them on their best behavior. If I asked you and Tilly to go check on them, it would be like sending you into a lion’s den.”

“It can’t be that bad,” Tilly said.
