JETS , CHARLES

Braniff recorded its greatest growth period to date between 1954 and 1964, under the guidance of the company’s new president Charles E. Beard, who ascended to the chief position after the death of company cofounder Tom Braniff on January 10, 1954. The company achieved record increases in revenues and traffic each of those years, as it officially entered the jet age.

President Beard ordered the company’s first jet airliner, the Boeing 707, as well as Lockheed L-188 Electra jet-powered airliners. These magnificent new planes began delivery to Braniff in the summer of 1959 and officially ushered in the jet age at the Dallas-based carrier. New routes were awarded to the East Coast, and the new Boeing 707s and Electras were perfectly suited for these longer routes.

The new jets enabled Braniff to increase its capacity, and as a result the company reported record earnings between 1954 and 1964. Revenues more than doubled from $45 million in 1954 to $109 million in 1964, which also marked the first time in company history that revenues exceeded $100 million. After 30 years, Beard announced his desire to retire in November 1964, on the eve of the arrival of Braniff’s first twinjet short-haul airliner, the BAC One-11.
