Shown here at Miami International in the late 1950s, the DC-7 CP was first introduced in 1953. It was the first commercial transport able to fly westward, against the wind, and still provide a nonstop cross-country flight.

The Douglas DC-7 was built from 1953 to 1958. It was the last major piston-engine-powered transport built before the jet airliner emerged in 1960. The DC-7C had improved long-range capabilities thanks to 3,400-horsepower R-3350 engines and increased fuel capacity in the longer wings. A total of 121 were built, and Pan Am had 27 of them. Very few remain in operation today, due to engine issues. The Polar Route mentioned above refers to the great circle routes between Europe and the west coast of North America in the 1950s.
