Chapter Five

Cord had gone over in his mind everything Benjie had told him in the beginning of their relationship about Johnny, and it was not a happy story. Benjie had been young, about nineteen, and had just come out to his parents, who weren't pleased with the news. Feeling uncomfortable in his parents' home now, he had left Eufaula, Alabama headed to Panama City, Florida. He'd had no real plan in mind and only enough money from his savings account to keep him going for about a month. He had taken a job in a fast food restaurant and rented a room in a small, cheap motel across the street from the beach, one of the few older motels left.

The job didn't pay much, but it would keep him going until he could find something better. He spent almost all of his spare time looking for something that paid more money.

He'd been working for about three weeks when he met Johnny. Benjie had been noticing him for a while because he came into the restaurant almost every morning for coffee. After the first week, Johnny had started to flirt outrageously with Benjie, and Benjie was flattered by the attention. Johnny was older and too good-looking for his own good. He was over six feet tall, and muscular, like he worked out.

Benjie was young and naive, and it didn't take long for him to fall for the older, more experienced man. Johnny had been very controlling and, sometimes, abusive, but Benjie had thought himself in love and, like everyone in an abusive relationship, hoped that the situation would improve. They were living together by this time and Benjie really had nowhere else to go, so he stayed for almost a year.

"Benjie, I know that you don't want to discuss this now, but I have some questions." At Benjie's exasperated sigh, Cord continued, "Just humor me, okay? And I promise that we won't talk about it again unless you hear from him."

Benjie crossed his arms across his chest, as if closing himself off, but said, "Go ahead. Ask."

"Well, first of all, how did he get your cell phone number?"

"Shit, Cord, I don't have a clue. I was so shocked to hear from him that it never even occurred to me."

"Do you think that anybody at the bar would have given it to him?"

"No. The only ones that have it would never give it to him. They were working there when he beat me up so bad. They saw what he did to me."

"What about your parents? Did they ever meet him?"

"Once. And my mother thought that he was 'absolutely charming' so I never told them how he really was."

"You never told them what he did to you?"

Benjie looked over at Cord and shook his head. Cord held out his hand and Benjie uncrossed his arms, taking Cord's hand. "At least, you were able to realize that things were never going to get better and stopped it right there. Some people never do, Benjie, and they end up getting killed.
