DEFINING SUCCESS

Success: noun The favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one’s goals (Dictionary.com).

What constitutes a successful show season? Well, that depends. It might mean winning a place on the US Equestrian Team, or qualifying for the Young Rider Championships. It might involve earning your bronze medal in dressage, or moving up to the amateur/owner division in the jumpers. However, it may also mean remembering your test at your first show, riding in your first Western Pleasure class, or making it around your first hunter course. Success is a very personal, individual concept, and it’s extremely important to define it for yourself, based on who you are, where you are in the training process, and where you are in your life at this moment.

Imagine yourself at Thanksgiving dinner this November. Someone asks if you had a good show season, and you answer that yes, it was very successful. Knowing very little about horses, the person asks, “What made it so good?” How will you answer this question? In other words, how will you know that you’ve had a good year?
