Chapter 20

Make sure you don’t hurl or you won’t get the girl ~ Text from Elder to Riley

Riley

I shove my hands in my pockets as I wait for Moon to answer her door. If she answers her door. She’s not exactly talking to me. After our kiss yesterday, she hid the rest of the day in her office.

Her front door opens and there she is. My Moon. Today’s the day I’m getting her back. But first.

“Can we talk?”

“What? No present?”

I considered buying her a gift, but I knew better. Moon cannot be bought. It was hard enough getting her to accept paying me a month late for my work at the diner.

“Moonbeam, I’ll buy you all the presents in the world, but I know presents aren’t what you want.”

She plants her hands on her hips. “Really? What is it I want?”

I step close until my chest is nearly touching hers. I’m tempted to inch a bit closer. I want to feel her soft breasts against my hard chest. But now is not the time for horny Riley. I need to win Moon back first. Then, horny Riley can take the lead.

“You want someone who shows up. Someone who will never leave. Someone to watch horrible movies with you while you gab the entire time.”

“Hey! My taste in movies isn’t horrible.”

I cock an eyebrow. “You watched Skyscraper five times.”

“Have you seen Dwayne Johnson’s arms?”

“Suicide Squad.”

“Kick-ass female protagonist.”

“Baywatch.”

“Refer to my earlier Dwayne Johnson remark.”

I could do this all day with her. She truly does have horrible taste in movies, but we’ve got more important things to discuss.

“May I come in?”

She frowns at me. Crap. Is she going to force me to confess my deepest, darkest secrets on her porch? But then her eyes narrow.

“Get in here,” she ushers me inside before shouting across the street, “Don’t think I don’t see you, Sage!” and slamming the door.

“You seriously can’t keep a secret in this town,” I mutter.

“This is Winter Falls. If you can’t handle it, leave.”

She can’t get rid of me that easily. I’m never leaving her again. “I’m not going anywhere.”

She rolls her eyes. “Whatever.”

I saunter to the living room and sit on her sofa.

“Make yourself at home, why don’t you?”

I wink. “I am. Thanks.”

“What do you want to talk about? Do you need the money after all? Let me go get it.”

I shackle her wrist before she can walk away. “Why don’t you sit down?” I pat the cushion next to me.

“Uh oh. This is a sitting down conversation? Do I need a drink first?”

She doesn’t, but I may need one.

“Stop stalling.”

She plops down in the corner of the sofa and crosses her arms over her chest. “You may begin.”

“Thank you.” I clear my throat. “I want to explain why I ghosted you.”

Her eyes widen and her foot bounces. “You do?”

“Yep.”

She twirls her hand in front of her. “You may proceed.”

I chuckle. “Thanks.”

“Um…” Maybe I should have let her stall because now that the time for me to confess has arrived, I have no idea where to begin.
