Chapter 10

It lost myself in work for the second half of the day. The sun stayed out for a few more hours, so I was able to get some outdoor projects done. I worked with Fox a little, too, to get his ideas for updating the restaurant. But when he started asking questions about Noah, I decided to call it quits for the day.

I wasn’t sure what to do about Noah. I definitely didn’t want to talk about him with Fox. Not now. Not when I had no clue what was going on.

One minute he was kissing me and the next…I had no clue. I could tell he was into me. And he’d said so himself. But there was something holding him back.

I showered in my tiny cabin and walked to the kitchen, trying to figure out what to make for dinner. I’d hoped I’d be eating with Noah. That maybe he would have joined me for a drive down to town so we could grab a bite and then maybe come back to my cabin with me. And stay the night.

I grunted. Yeah, right. I could barely get the guy to open up and whenever he did, it seemed like it was just to tell me how unreal all this felt or how it didn’t make sense that I wanted to be with him.

But those were my feelings and I wished he could see that.

I glanced to the door. I could try again. I should try again. Noah was the first person who’d interested me in what felt like forever. Didn’t it make sense to pursue this? That’s what Fox would tell me to do.

Life was too short not to try to be happy and be with someone who made you happy in return.

I ran my hand through my hair and then shrugged. Who cared if it was wet? I snagged my shoes from by the couch and put them on. Then I yanked open the door and stepped back in surprise.

Noah stood there, looking lost. Like he wasn’t sure he’d found the right place.

“Hey,” he said quietly.

“Noah. I was just going to come find you.”

“You were?”

He took off his glasses, which were coated in mist. I reached out and pulled him inside.

He gave a short laugh. “Sorry. I knew this was your place but then I was second guessing myself.” He set the glasses aside. “I guess you can tell by now that I do that a lot.”

“Is that a writer thing or a Noah thing?”

“Both, I guess. I’m an expert over-thinker.” Noah glanced around, as if realizing for the first time he was in my house.

“I’m sorry,” I said, stepping back. “You’re wet. You can take off your jacket and…well, I can’t give you much of a tour. This is pretty much everything. Bedroom and bathroom back there and we’re in the living room. Small kitchen.”

He smiled, and it nearly killed me when he met my eyes at the same time. Truly engaging with me. “It suits you.
