CHAPTER 7

Gage felt like he was walking on air by the time Christopher dropped him off. He didn’t so much step into his apartment as floated. He hadn’t realize how much being unemployed weighed on him until that weight had lifted. It never occurred to him to ask Christopher if he needed help in his store, but he was grateful that it occurred to Christopher to offer. Even part-time would make a huge difference in his life. Plus, he’d get to spend more time with Christopher, and there was nothing bad about that. In fact, it would be easier to remember that Christopher was off-limits once he was officially Gage’s boss.

The phone began to ring as soon as he locked the door, and he hurried to answer it, wondering if it would be Christopher. “Hello?”

“There you are.” Bodie’s exuberant voice cut through the line, the TV in the background muting at the same time. He must have turned the volume down when Gage picked up. “Where’ve you been? Did your adoring fans mob the stage?”

“No, nothing like that. I went and had a late dinner with Christopher.”

“Christopher?” Some of the energy faded, his tone growing

more cautious. “It’s a little late for him, isn’t it? It’s not the

weekend.”

“Yeah, but I invited him. We had a little fight the other day,

and I thought it’d be a peace offering.”

“Wait. You…asked him out?”

“You make it sound like we were on a date or something.” “You just said you invited him out for dinner. Did he pay? Or

pick you up?”

“He picked me up at the Red Fin because he wanted to take me

to one of his favorite places. And I paid because I invited him out

and that’s the polite thing to do.”

“No, that’s the date thing to do.”

Gage sat on the bed and kicked off his shoes. “Bodie,

Christopher and I aren’t dating. We’ll never date. We’re just

friends.”

“Which is why he picked you up at Power that night. Please.

I’m not stupid. I would just appreciate having a heads-up if you

make other plans.”

“But nothing happened that night.”

“So he just walked a perfect stranger out of the bar on a Friday

night? He’s a martyr, but he still has a dick. And I’ve seen the way

he looks at you.”

“He doesn’t want me,” Gage said softly. “Okay? We got here, he found out I had never been with another guy before, and he

left.”

“That’s ridiculous. Not even Christopher is stupid enough to

turn down an offer from a horny virgin.”

“Yeah, that’s what I figured, too. So clearly he’s not

interested.”

“But you still asked him out tonight.”

“Bodie, Jesus. It wasn’t a date. It was dinner. Don’t you ever

have dinner with people you aren’t dating? Or should I be jealous

of every meal you have without me?”

“Why didn’t you tell me about it, then?”

Gage fell back on the bed and stared at the ceiling, trying to

decide if he was annoyed or excited by Bodie’s jealousy. “I’m

sorry. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.”

A long breath over the line could only be a sigh. “It wouldn’t

be if I didn’t know how hot he is for you.
