âCome on,â Baron says, his hand falling on Royalâs shoulder. âItâs time to go.â He gives me a tight smile, something close to regret in his eyes.
Royal tenses, breaking our kiss. And though his face shows nothing, Iâve studied him for the past four months. Iâve learned to read him a little, enough to know that he doesnât want to go. Itâs in the way he stiffens, almost annoyed, at the interruption. Itâs in the reluctant way he drops his hands from around my body and steps back.
âSee you around, Jailbird,â Baron says. âStay out of trouble.â
Gloria appears at my side, linking her arm through mine. âOh, but weâre planning on getting in lots of trouble tonight,â she says, batting her lashes at the boys. âArenât we, Harper?â
âWhere are you going?â I ask.
âSomewhere you arenât invited,â Royal says flatly. âAnd leave the rest of my family alone.â
Duke appears on his other side, already swaying on his feet. A flicker of irritation crosses Royalâs face, but he jerks his chin at the twins. âLetâs go.â
Without a word of goodbye, he turns and stalks off. The twins follow, Duke stumbling drunkenly beside Baron.
âWhat the fuck was that?â I ask.
âOh, you know,â Gloria says. âBoys will be boys.â
âTheyâre going to a Midnight Swans meeting, arenât they?â I ask, remembering Mr. Dâs introduction. He said they meet at midnight once a week. What better night than New Yearâs?
âYou have to let them have their own lives, too,â Gloria says. âYou wouldnât want Royal all up in your business seven days a week.â
Royal has made it very clear he has the right to be up in my business any time he wants. True, he lets me have Saturdays, and I let him have Sundays, but thereâs no agreement beyond that.
âLetâs follow them,â I say, grabbing Loâs hand and dragging her toward the door. âCome on!â
âAre you crazy?â she asks, digging her heels in.
âAbso-fucking-lutely,â I say. âYou have your car here. Itâs the perfect chance to follow them and get info on one of the meetings.â
âHarper, they donât want us there.â
âOf course they donât want us there,â I say. âThatâs why weâre following them. Theyâve never wanted me anywhere. I sure as hell didnât get where I am by leaving them alone when they told me to.â
âHarper,â she says firmly, grabbing my wrist and finally grinding to a halt at the door to the fancy ballroom where the hotel is throwing a party for what looks like every rich person in town. âListen to yourself. Youâre going off the deep end. This isnât how you relationship.â
âAnd you know how to relationship?â I ask. âYouâve been chasing a guy who doesnât like you for two years.â
âIâm not chasing Royal,â she says. âAnd if I was, I sure as fuck wouldnât be a desperate, aggressive bitch who didnât know when to leave well enough alone.â
âIs that why you let him take you here every Sunday to fuck?â I ask. âBecause youâre not some desperate bitch?â
âYou need to calm down,â she says.
