Chapter 14

Delilah

Cringing, I stare in the mirror.

“Wow, you look pretty,” Aiden beams as he barges into my room.

“You think so?”

“Uh-huh.” He crawls up on the bed. “Are you a princess?”

I turn back toward my mirror, spinning as I examine the red, A-line mini dress. “No, babe, I’m still your mommy.” Maybe I need to wear dresses more often or try to look more feminine instead of the paint-covered rags I usually sport during the day.

“That’s good, ‘cause I don’t want you to turn into a pumpkin.”

Laughing, some of my nerves over tonight dissipate. “No pumpkins. And I’ll be home well before midnight.” Selecting a pair of black stilettos, I slip them on, then add some chunky bracelets to my wrists. Glancing at the clock, I sigh. It’s not perfect, and the dress is probably too much for a first date, but I don’t have time to change anything.

I debate curling my hair, but a car engine revs outside as it pulls into my driveway. A few seconds later the doorbell rings. Awesome. That would be my date, Bryan, according to Ethan. And said babysitter has not shown up yet. My stomach knots, wondering if that’s a sign, some cosmic message that this is a bad idea.

“Zane,” I holler down the stairs, “can you please get the door?”

His little voice floats up the stairs, muttering something about his video game. Great. He’s not going to get the door until after he dies on his game. Shaking my head, I take one last look in the mirror. “It’ll have to do.” I grab my purse and rush down the stairs.

Smoothing my dress, I stand up a little straighter. This is it. I’m going on a date if Ethan shows up. He’ll come, he said he would. I take one more deep yoga breath, smooth my hair, then yank open the door.

“Ethan,” I exclaim, surprised to see him standing on my front steps. My shock is soon replaced with intense heat as he fills my entranceway, overpowering the space and drawing me to him. He’s wearing a T-shirt and jeans, nothing special, but freaking dog biscuits, the thoughts that fly through my head. And his intoxicating, musky scent isn’t helping. I want to bathe in that scent. Do all types of things in it.

“Holy fuck, Delilah.” My name rolls off his lips as his eyes caress up and down my body. That glance leaves me feeling more cherished and hotter than any touch I’ve ever received, making my knees weak and my body longing for more. He takes a step closer as his eyes turn dark. The steel grey in them transforms into an almost charcoal tone.

“Ethan, you’re here!” Zane exclaims, darting in from the living room. He clutches his controller with one hand and waves with his other one. “Mom said you get to babysit us tonight.”

“Hey, Bud.” Ethan blinks a few times. “You’re not with your dad tonight?”

“I’m not a baby,” Aiden whines as he trudges down the stairs, dragging an oversized, stuffed dinosaur behind him.
