There are many different aspects to having great defense, such as head movement, hand-eye coordination, understanding the ring, never taking your eye off your opponent, having an awareness of where you are in relation to the ropes, keeping your hands strategically located, and using great footwork. Many of the topics we discussed earlier in this book will play a role in defense, which is why it is important to practice the fundamentals religiously. They will help you in every area of boxing.

We have emphasized the importance of footwork throughout this book, and there’s a reason for that. Your feet are just as important for defense as they are for offense. Using them properly will allow you to keep your distance and move out of the way quickly to avoid dangerous blows to the head and body. Moving is the easiest way to avoid getting hit. You can basically avoid anything and everything if you just start running. Of course, running makes it difficult to create offense, and since you are enclosed by a ring, you can only run and move so far. The key to effective footwork is to move around the ring strategically to make your opponent miss and become frustrated. Once they become frustrated, it is easy to counterattack. If you move around well and have great cardio, your opponent will also get tired quickly, trying to catch you.
