Drive Phase

The drive phase never ceases. It influences the ball until the ball is off the hand. This is the swing’s contribution to ball motion. The swing should be a smooth arc. You can modify the direction or shape of the pendulum’s arc, but at no time should that movement be hesitant, jerky, or prematurely stopped.

Imagine a bucket full of water. If you swing hard enough, you can swing the bucket in a complete circle over your head and the water will not fall out. The ball has the same effect on the hand. If the swing is continual and the hand is positioned firmly behind and under the ball, the bowler remains in control of the ball. You should feel the ball fall through the downswing. The hand feels as though it is pressing against the back of the ball, and the wrist remains firm. It does not break back (figure 8.6a).
