Chapter 19
Kenji
Fen and Valente had done most of the work in finding a new place for Merc to live since Angel and I still couldnât leave her side thanks to the geas. Unlike with Glori, Fen and Valente didnât mind leaving me and Angel alone to guard Merc â she was no heir, after all. Still weak, Merc needed to rest throughout the day, but her color had improved significantly. We had all traveled south to the Boulder Reservoir area to check out the place, and Merc had declared it livable, so the packing began. As long as Merc stayed within a certain radius, Angel and I could help load and unload the beat-up old van Valente and Fen had procured.
The new place was two stories, with a porch off the back of the second floor that led down to a landing and then out to a wide, flat back field that desperately needed to be mowed. Trees towered over the house while letting in plenty of sunlight. Trees also lined the back field along its property line, obscuring the view of the mountains in the distance. Inside the house, most of the bedrooms were upstairs, while the living room and kitchen were downstairs. It was more than big enough for all of us, a relief after the cramped quarters of Mercâs one-bedroom college townhouse. And perhaps we might be spread out enough that Merc could use her laptop and phone one day⦠once the geas allowed us to leave her side.
Valente went inside, but Fen hung back. âStudy how disused the back lot appears now, Kenji,â she instructed in her calm voice. âWe should do our best to make this place look run-down and long abandoned.â
I concentrated on the house and its trees, making them leafy and covered in parasitic vines that choked out the light. When we were done, the tree limbs brushed the roof, and Fenâs illusion combined with my own left the roof patchy and unmaintained. Several of the windows now looked like they had been shattered by vandals, and graffiti marred one side of the house. In general, it looked long neglected and run down, but the house now also gave off a creepy, haunted vibe, something I didnât know how to create yet.
âHow did you get that sense of foreboding?â I asked.
Fen nodded, as though pleased Iâd noticed. It was difficult not to. âIllusions are more than just tricks of the eyes and ears. A good illusion can demoralize the enemy, and an even better one can demoralize the enemy while encouraging allies, though that is difficult to maintain in the chaos of battle.â
As Fen showed me how to try it myself, I caught Merc nodding off in the backseat of the moving van. Angel started unloading boxes from the back, passing them to Valente when he periodically reappeared. I tried a few different things with the illusions, but my mind slowly grew foggy and unfocused.
âThatâs enough for today,â Fen said. âIâll ensure the
