Archer parked up in a car park near Ripon high street and led her to what looked, on the outside, like a normal run-of-the-mill bookshop called Many Worlds.

‘Books?’

‘And cake. Lots and lots of cake. Come on!’ He was smiling. Happy as he pulled open the door and she stepped inside, straight into a magical mystery world, unlike any bookstore she had ever been in.

The interior looked like a forest and all the shelves were branches of trees, lined with books. But there wasn’t any women’s fiction here. No romance. No crime. All the books were fantasy, or science fiction or even horror. There were nooks to sit and read, filled with comfy chairs or bean bags. There were models and figurines of creatures that looked like dragons and elves or swamp monsters. In one corner, there was a huge screen, playing the latest fantasy blockbuster with a group of people sitting in front of it, watching intently.

She turned to look at Archer, surprised. ‘Tell me the truth. Are you a secret geek?’

He smiled. ‘I am. And our child will be too, so get used to it. I shall introduce him or her to the possibilities of dragons, vampires, werewolves and wizards. So get used to the idea right now.’

She laughed. ‘I don’t have to!’

He raised an eyebrow. ‘Are you going to fight me on this?’

‘Why would I? When I’m a geek, too? I love this place!’ And she walked forward to a shelf lined with dark books, saturated with reds and purples and gothic fonts. They gleamed. They glowed. The typography was gorgeous, the artwork striking, drawing her in, making her slide one book out from the shelf after another, to read the blurbs on the back. Her pregnancy was forgotten. House-hunting forgotten. Feeling bad about her schooldays was over. Just being here, in this wonderful place, this magical world, was more than she could ever have hoped for! ‘How didn’t I know of this place?’

‘You’ve been away. It opened up three years ago now, I believe. There’s an upstairs you haven’t seen yet, it’s like a treehouse, with even more books and a café, filled with cakes and delicious pastries that you just know you shouldn’t eat, but have to, because they look so amazing.’

She beamed a happy smile, feeling hungry for a change. ‘We’ll get up there in a moment. I want a proper look down here first. Ooh, that looks good!’ She reached for a book. A thick one, a good five hundred pages, with a metallic green serpent on the cover, wrapped in and around the letters of the title, written in gold.

I could spend a fortune in here!

They passed a section that was all graphic novels and, though she’d never read one in her life, seeing them all face out like that intrigued her and she went in to browse them, picking up one or two that sounded interesting.

‘You big into those?’ Archer asked, smiling at her, enjoying her joy.

‘Never read one in my life.’

He laughed and she liked the sound.
