Nate and I were very proud of Camryn. She stood up to her father last night when he called. I knew that she wasn’t used to telling him no for any reason. I hoped that our backing gave her the strength she needed to stay strong. I also hoped that she didn’t do anything reckless out of a misguided attempt to protect Nate and me.

Camryn was in the living room, Skyping her mother. Callie certainly looked a lot better. In fact, I could see where Camryn got her good looks from. I was pretty sure that I had never seen her looking so good.

Callie was enjoying her new job. She loved the kids in her small town. The other teachers and the principal was great, and in general she was doing well. She said that she would be getting her own place next month. A small rental house was going to be available.

She was also still dating James. He treated her nicely, with respect. Whatever she wanted or needed, she got. He was gentle and had an even temper. He even understood when she ducked or put her arms in front of her face when there was a loud noise.

“He isn’t bothering you, is he?” Callie asked her daughter.

“No. It’s all good here. Ian and Nate are taking good care of me. They have even assigned me a bodyguard of sorts, who follows me everywhere I go.”

They talked a little bit longer, and then Camryn said that she had to get ready for class.

I noticed that Camryn was staring at my stitches during breakfast, as though she noticed them for the first time.

“Something bothering you, love?”

“I just hate that you got hurt, especially that you got hurt because of me.”

“Is that why you didn’t tell your mom about the accident?”

“I didn’t want her to worry. If she thought that you were in danger because of Dad, then she would start worrying about me. She is finally safe of him, and I don’t want her to do anything because of it.”

“Your mom is looking good. I’m glad that she’s finally happy.”

Camryn nodded, playing with her food a little.

“Hey,” I said, staring at her.

She looked up at me, and I noticed that she seemed to be a bit sad or worried.

“This isn’t your fault,” I said, pointing at my stitches. “You didn’t do this. He did.”

“He did it because of me.”

“He did it because he is a power-hungry, egotistical brute who is looking for someone to scare and control. He lost you and your mother. So now he figures he is going to try to scare me and Nate. We aren’t going to let him have that kind of control over us.”

“What if something worse happens?”

“I’m not going to promise you that he won’t try something stupid. All I can promise you is that he won’t win.”

She nodded, and I thought that she looked unconvinced.

“Don’t do anything rash or stupid.”

Camryn looked up at me sharply. “Why would you say that?”

“Because I know you, and I know that sometimes you do things without thinking about all of the consequences.
