âHey you! Vietato fumare. No smoking anywhere near the barn.â
The man spit his cigarette out and ground out the ash with the toe of his Armani loafers. He pushed his thick-framed black sunglasses up and rested them on his head. The practiced bored expression on his face made Octavia want to wipe it off with her shovel.
âSorry.â His mouth pulled into a fake smile as he swept his gaze over Octavia. âYou must be the barn person Mother was talking about.â
Let me guess. Octavia stopped herself from rolling her eyes. âMaybe. Who is your mother?â
âSofia Abrami. Iâm Carlo. She wanted me to drop off this file.â He held out a thick folder. He dropped his gaze to her breasts. âYou are as beautiful as she said.â
Ugh, why didnât I wear something besides this tank top? I hate to think what she said. Octavia suppressed a shudder. The idea of Sofia discussing her appearance with her son made her stomach roil. She took the folder from his hand and leafed through it before she handed it back. âI donât need this. She canât bring her horses here. Iâve not time or space.â Or patience to deal with her.
âMother wonât be happy.â He tapped the folder on his leg. âSheâs used to getting what she wants.â
âNot this time.â Octavia leaned on her shovel.
âSheâs willing to pay any amount Vivian wants.â He leaned back and raised an eyebrow. âSheâll pay extra for your services.â
Heâs not talking about the horses. What the hell? Sheâs sending her son to hook her up? What the hell? She stared into his eyes and frowned at him. âItâs not about the money.â
âEverything and everyone has their price. Whatâs yours?â
Octavia gripped the shovel tighter. âNothing youâââ She swept her gaze over him. ââor she could ever afford.â
He stepped back and sighed. âWhy does Vivian need this place anyway? It was too big when she was with that woman, and now sheâs alone she should sell it. Mother would buy it an instant.â
âWhat Vivian does and does not need is no concern of yours. Or your motherâs. She sells her crops to your mother. Why does she need more land?â
âShe doesnât, but she is obsessed with owning this again.â
Octavia frowned at him. âAgain?â
âWe had a few bad crops, ran into some loan problems a few years back. She needed cash, and Vivianâs father bought it without even coming to see it. Mother didnât know about him, or she never would have sold it to him.â
âWhat about him?â
âHeâsâ¦â The man looked around before he leaned close. He whispered, âAfrican.â
Octavia was torn between hitting him with the shovel and punching him. She took two steps back. âOh for fuckâs sake. Get out.â She raised the shovel, holding it across her body with both hands wrapped tight, the thought of time in jail the only thing keeping her from swinging it. âAnd tell your mother she can go fuck herself.â
The man straightened and smiled a smile that did not reach his eyes. âIâll tell her.
