“Hey you! Vietato fumare. No smoking anywhere near the barn.”

The man spit his cigarette out and ground out the ash with the toe of his Armani loafers. He pushed his thick-framed black sunglasses up and rested them on his head. The practiced bored expression on his face made Octavia want to wipe it off with her shovel.

“Sorry.” His mouth pulled into a fake smile as he swept his gaze over Octavia. “You must be the barn person Mother was talking about.”

Let me guess. Octavia stopped herself from rolling her eyes. “Maybe. Who is your mother?”

“Sofia Abrami. I’m Carlo. She wanted me to drop off this file.” He held out a thick folder. He dropped his gaze to her breasts. “You are as beautiful as she said.”

Ugh, why didn’t I wear something besides this tank top? I hate to think what she said. Octavia suppressed a shudder. The idea of Sofia discussing her appearance with her son made her stomach roil. She took the folder from his hand and leafed through it before she handed it back. “I don’t need this. She can’t bring her horses here. I’ve not time or space.” Or patience to deal with her.

“Mother won’t be happy.” He tapped the folder on his leg. “She’s used to getting what she wants.”

“Not this time.” Octavia leaned on her shovel.

“She’s willing to pay any amount Vivian wants.” He leaned back and raised an eyebrow. “She’ll pay extra for your services.”

He’s not talking about the horses. What the hell? She’s sending her son to hook her up? What the hell? She stared into his eyes and frowned at him. “It’s not about the money.”

“Everything and everyone has their price. What’s yours?”

Octavia gripped the shovel tighter. “Nothing you—’’ She swept her gaze over him. “—or she could ever afford.”

He stepped back and sighed. “Why does Vivian need this place anyway? It was too big when she was with that woman, and now she’s alone she should sell it. Mother would buy it an instant.”

“What Vivian does and does not need is no concern of yours. Or your mother’s. She sells her crops to your mother. Why does she need more land?”

“She doesn’t, but she is obsessed with owning this again.”

Octavia frowned at him. “Again?”

“We had a few bad crops, ran into some loan problems a few years back. She needed cash, and Vivian’s father bought it without even coming to see it. Mother didn’t know about him, or she never would have sold it to him.”

“What about him?”

“He’s…” The man looked around before he leaned close. He whispered, “African.”

Octavia was torn between hitting him with the shovel and punching him. She took two steps back. “Oh for fuck’s sake. Get out.” She raised the shovel, holding it across her body with both hands wrapped tight, the thought of time in jail the only thing keeping her from swinging it. “And tell your mother she can go fuck herself.”

The man straightened and smiled a smile that did not reach his eyes. “I’ll tell her.
