Lydia quickened her pace after checking her watch. She needed a break from Paul. He was too nice. He was dangerous when he was too nice. Guarding against his effects was easier when he was aggressive and pushy, liked he been last night in his suite and again after the cooking show. Where had the whole resignation ploy come from? He had some gall pretending to quit to get into her pants. Who was he anyway? A mass of contradictions swarmed in her head.

He was older than he let on, yet had no relevant education.

He said he'd ended a five-year long engagement. Someone he must have met in college, if his age was accurate, which she really doubted.

One minute he was all 'yes, boss' and 'no, boss' and the next he was arrogant enough to presume to tell her how their work should go. Probably didn't like working for women. Maybe that really was his damage. Maybe seducing her was his way of bringing her down a peg. Well, that certainly was not going to happen! She valued her job too much. If only convincing her traitorous body were as easy. To say parts of her perked up whenever he leaned in or spoke in that lazy voice, so like a drowsy, post-coital lover, would be an understatement. They damn near rioted!

Chemistry. That's all it was. Take one very handsome male and add to one female who hadn't had sex in what, a year—good God, a whole year—and her legs practically spread on their own. Only she wasn't that type of woman. Never had been the type to throw caution to the wind for hedonistic pleasures. Except ... she did like him. A lot. He wasn't mean or impatient or rude to her. That was more than chemistry. Except ... his occasional lapses into Cajun patois made her imagine him whispering those same words with erotic abandon in her ear.

Maybe there's a first for everything ...

Her hussy hormones screeched to be heard.

A fine man like that, who would know? Just you and him, and he'd no doubt want to forget the moment his feet hit terra firma. What better recipe for a fling?

Except she wasn't fling material. And what if he didn't quit like he claimed he would? Then what? And what kind of woman would require a man to give up his livelihood so he could be with her? What kind of man did that? And for her?

She'd stayed with Colin far longer than had been healthy if only because she didn't want to dive into the dating pool again. She liked sex on demand. She liked having a dinner companion, liked always having a date for New Years.

But you didn't particularly care for his sharing the "on demand" sex, did you?

No, she did not. Clearly her hormones were not trustworthy and had caused her to make bad decisions in the past. They would say anything to lead her down the path to fleeting ecstasy, never mind the arduous trudge back up the hill of self-esteem.
