Chapter 13

Luna

I thought for sure Declan and I were going to have sex last night, but when we got back to his place, he lead me to the room I stayed in last night and kissed me on the forehead before telling me goodnight. Part of me was disappointed, but another part of me loves that he can read me and that he knew I wasn’t quite ready mentally, even if my body sure was.

We’re on our way to the hospital now, after a lazy Saturday morning of sleeping in, cooking brunch together, and yeah, some making out, because how could I keep my hands off of someone so ridiculously sexy?

I’m a little apprehensive about Lucas meeting Declan. I told Lucas yesterday about how Declan basically saved me and that we’re kind of a thing now. He’s skeptical of the whole boss/employee dynamic, though he’s grateful I still have a job.

Declan and I stop in front of Lucas’ room, where I take a deep breath. Maybe I’m more anxious about this than I thought.

“Are you embarrassed to be seen with an old bastard like me?” He teases.

An unexpected laugh bubbles up from my chest and shake my head no, peering into those grey eyes of his that are sparkling. I needed a bit of a tension breaker, and Declan seemed to know that too. How does this man already know me better than I know myself?

I walk into the room and tug Declan along, the smile still on my lips.

“About time you got here! Is that boss of yours making you do special favors for him on the weekend now?”

“Lucas! Oh my god!” I glare at him and try to force my blush away.

“Hey, Lucas. I’m the boss,” Declan says, not missing a beat.

“Hi, bossman. Are you being nice to my sister? Making sure she eats and sleeps? She’s not very good at taking care of herself or taking orders.”

“Oh, I don’t know about that. She takes orders just fine.” Declan gets a wicked smile on his face, and I smack him in the chest.

“Declan!”

He laughs, freaking laughs, while Lucas mimes gagging and throwing up.

“In a strictly professional setting, of course,” Declan says, though his tone indicates that’s not at all what he means.

“Uh-huh,” Lucas says, though he’s hiding a smirk. “If she’s happy, I’m happy.”

I glare at both of them, but Declan just smiles at me. I roll my eyes, but can’t help smiling back, even though I’m thoroughly mortified.

We slip into an easy conversation, mostly Declan asking questions and Lucas telling him embarrassing stories about me as a child or pranks we played on each other, but I don’t mind. Sitting back and listening to the two of them talk, watching the way Declan is thoroughly interested in Lucas while he still keeps a hand on my leg, warms me deep inside. Something clicks into place and I know I’m ready to take things further with him. My body was on board from day one, but my mind needed to catch up.
