CHAPTER TWELVE

Moya called a meeting at 7:00 AM the next morning. Everyone, except for Kentroy and Moya, were still dressed in their sleepwear. Kentroy and Moya were already clad in their uniforms. The meeting was held in the reception area. On my way from my room, Tamra bumped into me without even a backward glance. I shook my head in awe and stared after her.

Just then, I noticed a slim, dark, young girl in the T.V. room, dusting with a bucket of water containing a mop on the floor. I had never noticed her before. She was obviously the cleaning lady. She ignored us as she went about her chore. I caught a glimpse of Peabo in the yard, cleaning up. I yearned to go out in the big yard and just bask in its beauty. I noticed there was nowhere to sit, so I thought it was wise to remain standing as well.

Rochelle stood apart from everyone and looked bored. Mackeba and Nelly chattered away, while Karelle kept twining her long tresses around her finger and nodding at whatever Lacy-Ann was whispering to her and glancing at Mackeba from time to time. I looked around for Shawnie, who I found was standing beside Rico, with her phone in her hand. Apparently, they were listening to a song as their heads bobbed up and down; Shellena gave them a hard look. My eyes circled the group, and it was disheartening to note that I was the only one not interacting with anyone. A feeling of loneliness suddenly swept over me.

“Okay. Good morning, guys. Please turn off all cell phones,” Moya instructed.

There was still a light chatter, and Moya had to clean her throat for the conversation to die down.

“Much better, thank you,” Kentroy stated, with his nose in the air. He seemed to be quite stuck up and unsociable, especially to us on the lower level. According to Shawnie, we were like second-class citizens.

“This will be a brief meeting. The main reason I called you guys here is to congratulate Adeema for being successful on her first call.” Moya beamed and started to applaud. Shawnie, Kentroy, and Rico joined in, but everyone else remained still. Moya stopped in mid-air and exclaimed, “Hello! Please show some love, people!”

“Like seriously. This is what we are here for?” Mackeba asked miserably.

Moya ignored her, and the others barely put their hands together. My eyes dropped as I felt embarrassed.

“Good job, Adeema. Keep it up,” Moya encouraged, but it did not help to lift my spirits as I could literally feel the chills from their icy stares. I was deflated. I wanted Moya to just get it over with.

“Congrats, Adeema,” Rico chimed in, and I flashed him a smile.

“Anyway, Adeema, you will spend a few more days with the client before the account will be sent upstairs. Your job now is to direct him to online chat, okay?” Moya asked.

“Y-Yes,” I whispered.

“Jesus Christ, Midget must be using some obeah oil from the country. She moving too fast,” Mel commented with distaste, while Tamra and Mackeba tittered.
