I needed air, pushing out through the doors and out of the building itself I gulped in the fresh air and hoped that it would steady my head. I swear I'd almost done it, it had almost happened. There in his arms on the dance floor I'd almost given myself to him and I'd almost asked him to take me. I'd forgotten about Frank, about my husband, because in that moment Bryce was working my body so masterfully that it might as well have been my husband there instead.

If I'd have closed my eyes, I might well have pretended that, but it just would have been playing pretend. Everything else would have been real because I was still married. It would have been cheating, far too far over the line for it to be acceptable to anyone. What did it matter that Bryce had pushed my buttons? It was all just an accident and it wasn't one worth throwing my whole damn life away over. No I needed this, this moment of focus so that I could center myself and keep myself from making a mistake that I would surely come to regret.

I don't know how long I stood out there breathing deeply, my hands rubbing my arms to push some warmth into me while I stared out at the darkness beyond this little patio I found myself on. I held myself there shivering, listening to the muffled strains of music from the party and willing myself to calm down, hoping it would be enough.

When I heard the door open behind me I somehow knew it was him come to find me. When I turned to look at him, I knew no amount of time away from him would give me the strength to resist.

In a lot of ways my whole life path had been weaving and winding back to him. From the moment I first met him through all those years of anger back to this time, with him having the perfect excuse to play me like a fiddle even if he didn't know he was doing it.

Truth was, Bryce would always be that darkly intense man who'd approached me at the bar. Sent there by Frank but I didn't know that until I'd fallen for his charms, until his cocksure arrogance had made me want him, but the knowledge that it was a test had made me resist.

That was just an excuse. I may not have cheated but I was cheating in my own heart, willing to give my body over to this man in the hope that he could make good on the promise of his eyes and make me moan.

All I needed now was an excuse. All I needed now was something I could hold onto as a justification. Something that would give me a reason to throw myself at Bryce, to get the follow-up to the brushing foreplay that he'd been teasing me with all day long.

That was crazy though, right? That wasn't the right thing to do.
