Chapter Fifteen
Helpers
âI saw your parents yesterday, Jim.â
âI havenât spoken to them yet this week. How were they? Howâs your dad?â
âThey donât change any more than you do. My dadâs gone. They were at his funeral.â
âIâm so sorry, Dom. I wish Iâd known. Your parents werenât any older than mine, were they? You donât expect them to be taken so soon.â
âTaken.â The word meant more and worse to me than I knew it did to him. âHe had a fall,â I said, âand then he caught pneumonia in hospital.â
âI thought they were supposed to be able to cure that.â Jimâs protest vibrated the phone at my ear before he said more gently âMay he rest in peace, and your mother.â
âI hope that too.â
âTheyâll be in my prayers, and I know my parents will say one. Do you still go in for that at all?â
âI havenât since before we left school. Speaking of whichââ
âMaybe you should give it another chance. Itâs never really gone, and it might be a comfort to you.â When I didnât answer he said âWill you have some family who are?â
âA wife and a son.â As a response this felt close to dishonest. âYour parents mentioned you have children,â I said.
âRobert and Dominic. Theyâre quite a pair.â
For the duration of a long breath I had no words. âJim, thank you, really. I wish Iâd known when he was christened.â This sounded like a rebuke, and so did âWhy didnât you say when we saw Bobby? Or did you tell her before I showed up?â
âCarole gave me the feeling she didnât care much for youngsters, so I kept mine to myself. Why didnât you say you had a family? Was there someone you didnât want to know about them?â
Heâd begun to sound like the police officer he was, but then it was this side of him I needed. âIt might have been because I was worried for my son,â I said.
âThey can keep you awake at night and no mistake. Whatâs the worry with yours?â
I took a prolonged breath as an aid to taking care how much I said. âTobyâs had a sleep disorder pretty well since he was born. Nocturnal absences, Iâve heard them called. Seizures in his sleep.â
Jim was silent long enough to let me wonder if my sonâs name had disappointed him. âYouâll be getting him some treatment, wonât you?â he said.
âWe thought weâd found the ideal one, only now Iâve discovered Christian Noble and his daughter are involved.â
âGood God, him again?â Jim might have been disgusted with him or with me for bringing Noble up. âI thought he made himself scarce after his church was wrecked,â he said. âWhat are you telling me heâs up to now?â
âHeâs running a private facility where they claim they can treat children with Tobyâs condition. Tina Noble has been sending children there. Sheâs, sheâs a paediatrician.â Iâd nearly said more than I thought Jim would believe, but I managed to add only âHer fatherâs putting his ideas in all their heads.
