“Luka! If you don't get down here right this second, we will be late for the Church Homecoming!” his mom yells up the stairs. Luka sighs, rolling his eyes. He pulls his phone out for the five hundred and seventy-seventh time that day, checking to see if Cadeon has texted him back. He is disappointed to see that he has no new notifications.

Luka didn’t miss the pain that passed across Harlan’s features when he saw him touching Willow so intimately during lunch on Friday. Harlan disappeared after that. He wasn’t in class for the rest of the day, and nobody knew where he had gone. Cadeon had even seemed lost, saying that he had just seen him at lunch, and he seemed fine. Luka couldn’t shake the feeling that he had something to do with Harlan’s disappearance. He felt sick just thinking about it, desperately wanting to explain everything to him.

He had texted Cadeon a few times, but he hadn’t really texted him back. The only thing he had said the first time was that he would check on Harlan, but that was it. Luka is beginning to fear the worst about the whole situation. He really should have talked to Harlan about it first, but he didn’t think he would react badly. Harlan always seemed like he didn’t care about anyone or anything, so why would he care about this? Luka sighs, rubbing his face. This whole thing is fucked up, and he definitely doesn’t want to sit through church service and the church's Homecoming celebration.

“Coming!” Luka finally replies, glancing in the mirror. He looks weary and tired, older than his mere eighteen years. He told his mom and Matt about Willow. They were both very pleased with the news and told him to invite her to dinner next week. Luka didn’t really want to think about it, but he is glad Willow knows everything. At least he doesn’t have to do more than touch her waist and occasionally hold her hand.

He walks down the stairs, already dreading the coming hours. He's thankful that Ezra will be there to keep him company. When he gets to the bottom of the stairs, he smiles at his sisters, who are dressed in their Sunday best. This church service is going to be a bit different than usual. It is being held later in the afternoon because they are all celebrating with a communal dinner afterwards to commemorate the opening of the church twenty-six years ago. Southern people are so strange.

“Ready to go? Got your Bible?” Matt asks, coming to stand in front of him. Luka nods in response, not really in the mood to talk. They all make a single file line as they head to his parents’ van and pile in, Luka and Lizzie strapping Becca and Gabby into their booster seats.

The car is loud, like everything else in Luka's life. It is exhausting constantly being surrounded by people. He rests his head against the window, trying to tune out the noise as he silently wishes he could be alone in his room.
