“Tell me, Scarlett. Do you believe Harden Graham murdered those people?”

Bell wasn’t sure how to answer Wolf. Graham had popped onto their radar before she could process the information.

“I’m not sure,” she said, lowering herself onto a cushioned chair inside her hotel room. Wolf leaned against the wall, his eyes as intense as she’d seen them in months. “Graham doesn’t fit the profile, but there’s little to go on, and he has a violent temper.”

“The unsub didn’t murder the Kovers in revenge.”

“But Graham worked for the family,” said Bell, “and it’s awfully coincidental that the murders occurred after his release from prison.”

“What’s the plan? Are the police pursuing Graham for the murders?”

“Not until enough evidence surfaces. For now, they’re maintaining surveillance.”

“Which is about as effective as plugging a dam with cork. If you want answers, I can get them for you.”

Bell gritted her teeth. “I advise you to stay away from Graham’s house. You already attracted the police once this week. We don’t need another mistake.”

“I apologize for putting our partnership at risk. I’ll conceal my presence from the police; they won’t see me. You appreciate my skills.”

“I suppose. You still haven’t explained how you broke into a prison, murdered a former senator, and left a prison guard naked in the rain.”

“My secrets are my own,” said Wolf. “If I told you, I fear you’d get yourself into trouble. You have that habit.”

“And that’s why you love me.”

She clamped her lips together, regretting her words. Wolf only smiled in understanding.

“I’ll give you my opinion before you fall asleep. Remember my warning: Watch yourself. All of Orlando knows you’re staying at The Bond.”

She climbed off the chair and followed him to the door. “It’s you who needs to be careful, Wolf. Don’t let the police catch you.”

After he departed, she bolted and locked the door. Her gaze shot to the hotel phone. No messages awaited her.

Returning to the chair, she pulled over the footrest and propped up her legs. Past the window, light drained from the evening sky. She opened Fran Kover’s diary and skimmed the pages. The woman had kept a diary for the last four years, though she only made entries once or twice a week. One paragraph caught Bell’s attention.

I don’t know what to do. Eric loves the house, and I have to admit it’s perfect for the kids. Great neighborhood and schools. A big backyard. But we can’t afford it. Last week, the realtor showed us a beautiful little place for $150,000. I should emphasize little, because that’s what it is. Two bedrooms, friendly neighbors, safe section outside the city. But what will we do when the kids grow up and need their own rooms? A two-bedroom house won’t be enough.

Bell skipped ahead. She searched for conflicts with people but found none. There was never a suggestion that Eric Kover had procured a loan from a shady partner and put a target on his family’s back. She found no reason anyone would hurt the Kovers.

Lost the necklace. It wouldn’t upset me so much except it was Mom’s, and it’s all I have to remember her by.
