Chapter Eleven

Mars had looked Andy over and determined there would be no lasting damage, but that didn’t stop the captain from insisting she rest for several days, just in case. He had been furious at first when he found out what she had done, but that hadn’t lasted. In the end, he had even seemed impressed.

The other woman, Lorlee, Andy had learned, hadn’t been so lucky. Both of her legs were broken. She would need to stay in a medical pod for several days until her vitals stabilized.

Currently, Andy sat on the edge of Mars’s bed, watching as she danced around her room to the beat of some song Andy had never heard. Mars had switched out her long dark braids for hair of white silk, and Andy found herself mesmerized by the way it wound between Mars’s fingers as she swayed to the beat.

“You’ve really never heard of this band?” Mars asked.

“Nope.”

“Huh, weird. They were all over the stations a few years ago.”

Andy shrugged, trying not to stare at the sway of Mars’s hips. “Guess I was busy.”

Mars peeked at her from beneath her lashes. “Don’t you ever get tired of being busy? Don’t you just want to go wild sometimes?”

Andy laughed. “I suppose. I just don’t always have the chance.”

“Well,” Mars held out her hand. “You have the chance right now.”

There was only a moment of hesitation before Andy took Mars’s hand and allowed her to pull their bodies flush together. Andy inhaled sharply. The smell of jasmine and clean clothes flooded her senses, and it took some self-control for Andy to not press her nose to Mars’s neck and inhale. Mars began to lead them around the room in a dance, and Andy knew her face was flushed.

“You look quite cute when you get blushy.”

Andy snorted and rolled her eyes. “Shut up.”

“I mean it. Not to say you aren’t always cute, but it’s a nice bonus.”

“You’re a shameless flirt.”

“So?” Mars asked, dropping Andy into a dip. “You don’t seem to mind it.”

Andy laughed as Mars spun away from her, only to twirl back and take Andy’s hands once more. And no, she admitted to herself. She didn’t mind it. Mars flashed her a smile, her eyes far too knowing for Andy’s liking.

“How many times have you been romanced in your life?”

Andy scoffed. “Romanced? I haven’t had much time for that.”

Mars raised her eyebrows. “Well now, that’s just a damn shame. Don’t you think you deserve someone who wants to spend all their time with you? Someone who looks at you and knows without a doubt that you’re the reason the sun continues to shine.”

Andy lowered her eyes. “It’s not as simple as that. Back home, I can’t do things just because I want to.”

A frown creased Mars’s brow. “Why would you want to go back to that?”

“Because I have to. I can’t stay here forever.”

“Are you not happy here, Andy?”

“How can I be happy if being here isn’t my choice?”

“And if you had the choice, what would you do?”

Andy opened her mouth, expecting to be sure of her answer.
