Michael had been incarcerated for a little over eleven months and now the day had finally come for him to be sentenced. He knew his chances for prison were great, despite what his lawyer had said. He knew the score better than anyone, because in jail, information flowed like illegal drugs. No one was left ill-informed or completely in the dark. Inmates knew about the judges, the district attorneys, and the *public pretenders (slang for court appointed attorneys who performed below standards which often led to 95% of their clients going to jail or prison). They knew that the ‘so-called’ courts appointed lawyers were a part of a system designed to take most of them down. They worked right along with the district attorneys and judges. Their interest was in self-preservation, not in defense of the clients that were assigned to them. That’s why many of them hurry to make a deal even if the person in question is seen as being clearly innocent. Court appointed attorneys are nothing but another spoke in the wheel that turns the controls of this legal form of slavery. If possible, it would be better for most minorities to represent themselves rather than to allow a court appointed attorney from the state to sell them out to the highest bidder.
Not only were African Americans victims of this cruel system but anyone who is poor, uneducated, and unaware falls victim to a miscarriage of injustice. Hopefully, Michael wouldn’t be added to the list of the betrayed.
